Direct pain aside, minor aches and cramps associated with a back pain problem can make you irritable—ruining your good time. What Causes Back Pain? A few things cause back pain. Motor vehicle accidents can cause numerous injuries and conditions to thebody, includingwhiplash. WHIPLASH isa traumatic injury to the structures of the cervical spine (the seven uppermost vertebrae), and involves muscles and ligaments. It is caused by extremes in range of motion intheabsenceofseverebony injurysuchas fracture,dislocation or disc herniation. Sports injuries, physical abuse and other trauma can cause whiplash, but most often it results form rear-end motor vehicle accidents. Symptoms can begin anywhere from a few hours to one day after an accident. The Five Grades of Whiplash Associated Disorders Whiplash Associated Disorders (WAD) be classified into five grades • GRADE 1 symptoms include neck pain, stiffness or tenderness. • GRADE 2 symptoms include neck pain with decreased range of motion and point tenderness. • GRADES 3 & 4 are the most serious and require further follow-up withaphysicianpriortoapatientstartingaphysicaltherapyprogram. For these types of WAD, conservative care often is prescribed, with recommendations for “act as usual” care (no active treatment) or physical therapy. For patients, pain reduction is the most common goal, in which case active physical therapy should be considered. Supported Bridge Lie on your back with knees bent and your feet hip distance apart. Place your feet close enough so they can be touched by the finger tips. Inhale and lift the hips, and while doing so, place a block or rolled up towel under the sacrum. Keep the chest open. Hold for 30 seconds and repeat 10 times. For a more challenging exercise, repeat the same steps without using the block for support. When lifting hips, try to arch to the point where your torso and hips become a straight line and your pelvis is level. Try not to arch too high.
