JEAN PAUL CHONQUI
WHAT HAS CHANGED SINCE COLLABORATING WITH NATURAL HABITATS?
SHORT INTRODUCTION TO THE FARMER Jean Paul is the youngest of 6 brothers who each run a part of the Chonqui family business. Jean Paul manages all 5 of the family plantations, which span 750 hectares in total. They are named Seco Malo, Lota A, Hacienda las Vueltas, Loma de Coco, and Sillagua. BRIEF OVERVIEW OF HOW THEY WORK As one of the larger farms within the Natural Habitats network, Jean Paul must ensure his plantations meet stricter requirements. For example Jean Paul’s employees are provided with an on-site cafeteria, washrooms, and housing. Alongside this, their on-site cook, Dolores, prepares and serves a nutritious lunch every day. Jean Paul also has to make sure an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) has been performed on the plantation level to ensure any social and environmental issues are promptly addressed.
For the ESIA, Natural Habitats works with BioAP Biologica Aplicada.
Researcher Maria Paula Romero oversees the social assessment survey, which several of the workers at the plantation must fill out anonymously. The questions cover many topics including the company agreements, salary, contracts, communication, social security, working hours, free association, delivery of personal protective equipment, risk mitigation, access to clean water, training, proper work facilities, housing, complaint procedure, awareness of company policies, and human rights issues. An ESIA helps assess and predict any negative social and environmental impacts which may occur, and develops suitable mitigation measures. An ESIA is also supported by an Environmental and Social Management Plan that requires regular follow ups to ensure anything that may have been raised is addressed.
“Onsite facilities are not the only requirement. An Environmental and Social Impact Assessment also needs to be performed on the plantation level, to ensure social and environmental issues are addressed.”
