A Call for Evidence exploring the potential use of biofuels as an alternative to home heating oil and fossil-based LPG has been launched by Northern Ireland NI ECONOMY MINISTER SEEKS VIEWS ON POTENTIAL ROLE OF BIOFUELS
Economy Minister Conor Murphy. Biofuels, specifically hydrotreated
vegetable oil (HVO) and bio-liquefied petroleum gas (Bio-LPG) can be used as an alternative heat source to fossil fuels. Industry research and analysis indicates biofuels are the most likely renewable heat alternative for homes and businesses that cannot be heated by heat pumps, the gas grid or heating networks. “Moving away from fossil fuels is vital in the transition towards net zero,” said the Minister. “Over half of our homes and businesses are reliant on heating oil. This heavy reliance on fossil fuels not only creates carbon emissions but leaves us vulnerable to global price rises. The need to source local, secure and sustainable heating alternatives is pressing. “This Call for Evidence will help the Department assess the potential role
biofuels can play in decarbonising our heat, identify challenges and opportunities, and the potential costs involved. The Department is particularly interested in how biofuels can complement other low-carbon heating solutions. “We must deliver on the Energy Strategy’s commitment to replace high carbon heat sources with low- and zero-carbon alternatives. Technologies like heat pumps are vital for the long- term decarbonisation of heat, however
upgrade works can be costly for some homes and businesses. “Biofuels can offer an important transitionary option, one which is secure, affordable and sustainable. The development of the biofuels sector can also boost the local green economy through the creation of highly-skilled jobs and contributing to increased productivity.” The Call for Evidence is open until March 4 at: www.consultations.nidirect.gov.uk/dfe/ using-biofuels-to-transition-away-from- fossil-fuel

PUBLIC CONSULTATION LAUNCHED FOR MAJOR WATER INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT
Uisce Éireann has launched a non-statutory consultation for the first major new-source water infrastructure investment in the region for 60 years, the Water Supply Project Eastern and Midlands Region. One of the largest infrastructure projects in the history of the state, it will aim to create capacity for meeting the water-supply needs of up to 50% of the population. The once-in-a-generation project will develop a climate-resilient, long-term water source to meet the demands of a growing
population and economy, including housing. The project proposes to abstract water from Parteen Basin, upstream of Parteen Weir on the Lower River Shannon, to be treated near Birdhill, Co Tipperary. It will then be transported 170km through counties Tipperary, Offaly and Kildare to a termination point reservoir at Peamount, connecting into the Greater Dublin Area water distribution network. The consultation process will be open until March 4. www.water.ie/watersupplyproject

OFTEC IRELAND NEWS
OFTEC IRELAND MANAGER DAVID BLEVINGS WAS AMONG REPRESENTATIVES FROM TAZCH RECENTLY HOSTING THE SUSTAINABLE ENERGY AUTHORITY OF IRELAND AT GRANT ENGINEERING IN OFFALY… Next steps for biofuels in Ireland
As many readers of this publication will know, in Ireland we have three organisations with an interest in liquid fuels - OFTEC, UKIFDA and Fuels for Ireland. OFTEC represents manufacturers of liquid fuel equipment and technicians, UKIFDA the fuel distributors, and FFI looks after the interests of oil importers. Rather than three groups all doing their own thing, several years ago we agreed to come together and establish TAZCH (The Alliance for Zero Carbon Heating). Under this name, we have campaigned successfully on behalf of the liquid fuel

sector, and a pre-election success was inclusion of the words ‘support the use of HVO and other biofuels to reduce emissions from existing homes’, which we welcomed. “As part of our continuing

campaign, we invited representatives from

suggested we could deliver 20% this year and indeed, Certa are already offering a 20% HVO/kero blend currently. The key learning point for us was that SEAI holds functions as both a delivery agency and as a research and analysis performing organisation providing evidence to support to energy policymakers. The references to evidence at the meeting emphasised how the National Heat Study outputs have supported, and informed policy decisions, and in turn SEAI delivery programmes are guided by the ministerial direction they are given. We did advise SEAI that all forms of low- and no-carbon heating will be required if we stand a chance to deliver on the 2030 targets. We acknowledge that heat pumps
have their place in a thermally-efficient house but, for the majority of older and off-grid homes, we still believe sustainable biofuels are the right choice. The new Programme for Government (PFG) states that the Government will consider the use of sustainable biofuels to reduce emissions from existing home boilers where deep retrofits are not possible in the short term.
Engineering in Offaly and the reps from SEAI welcomed the presentation and tour of the facility. Many questions were asked about the equipment and fuel, including the inevitable questions about supply, affordability, sustainability, and availability of feedstock. A constructive debate about the pros and cons of biofuels was had and SEAI did refer to the national heat study which said heat pumps and heat networks were the preferred choice without ruling out some biofuels. We indicated that the sector could deliver decarbonisation very quickly and presented a blended pathway suggesting that the renewable heat obligation proposal at 2% was far too low and lacked ambition. We
Given that we are now in the PFG, and with increasing support for the
deployment of biofuels in the heat sector, we are confident that the mood is right for getting politicians to show some ambition and introduce a renewable heat obligation at a realistic level that will set us down a pathway for a blended approach away from traditional kerosene.

REPLACING KEROSENE WITH HVO IN HOME HEATING COULD REDUCE CO₂ EMISSIONS BY UP TO 90%, ACCORDING TO FIREBIRD, A LONG-TIME ADVOCATE OF THE SUSTAINABLE ENERGY SOLUTION…
An easy win for the environment of sustainable biofuels to reduce emissions from existing homes with boilers where deep retrofits are not possible in the short term. 700,000 homes in Ireland still rely on kerosene for heating. A few have switched to heat Hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) is gaining momentum in the global push for
an immediate reduction in carbon emissions with minimal disruption and at practically no cost to the end user. The financial burden of switching to heat pumps and deep retrofits is a major obstacle for Irish households. The average cost of a government-supported retrofit is €37,489, making full electrification unaffordable for most families. However, introducing a 20% renewable fuel blend across all oil-heated homes would reduce emissions on the same scale as retrofitting 160,000 homes - at practically no cost to the end user. The industry has come together and is ready to deliver this 20% blend immediately. At a 20% blend, there is no requirement for the homeowner to make any modification to their existing boiler, so this transition is 100% seamless to the end user. This is an easy win for the environment. For more information, visit www.firebird.ie
sustainable energy solutions. Firebird, a leading advocate for renewable energy, has been committed to supporting HVO since 2016. Firebird has been actively requesting the Irish Government to secure official recognition of HVO as a substitute for kerosene in home heating for many years. Q&A
A PERSONAL SEARCH FOR AN ALTERNATIVE TO SALT-WATER SOFTENERS HAS EVOLVED INTO A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY FOR DROGHEDA PLUMBER AARON LEDDY… ‘AQUABION® has been a game changer in my own home’ Impressed by great results after installing the AQUABION® in his own home, RGI- registered Aaron Leddy from Lexington Plumbing and Heating has since become an Ireland ambassador for the water treatment system. Developed by CEO Marc Flettner in 2003, AQUABION® is an environmentally- friendly water treatment designed to reduce limescale build-up and corrosion problems in plumbing systems and appliances across domestic, commercial and industrial properties. Aaron talked to Ireland’s Plumbing & Heating Magazine about how he got involved with the brand: HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT AQUABION®? My partner had got lovely blond highlights in her hair, but within a few days they turned a green colour. Eventually we determined a salt-water softener we installed the year before had reacted with the chemicals in her hair and was also aggravating her psoriasis. In my research to find an alternative softener, I came across AQUABION® and got in contact. They advised me where I could purchase the AQUABION®, and Marc himself recommended I do the online registration and course for installers to activate my five-year warranty. I went to Plumb-It in the Nangor Road
Drogheda plumber Aaron Leddy.
Business Park, Clondalkin and got my first AQUABION® system. I removed my salt-water softener and installed the AQUABION®, with the process taking me about two hours. After about two days, my partner’s hair was a lot better and her skin wasn’t as red after showering. Our dishes were also sparkling like never before. When I contacted Marc and told him about the results, he asked if I had any interest in partnering with AQUABION® in my area to do installations. HOW MANY UNITS HAVE YOU INSTALLED TO DATE? I have installed over 150 AQUABION® to date, including 15 during January alone, mostly for domestic customers. I’ve removed 45 salt-water softeners in favour of AQUABION®, with customers fed up with the expense of the salt-water system averaging €300 per year and the space it takes up. AQUABION® is maintenance-free, salt-free and takes up little-to-no room. I hope to install over 200 AQUABION® units this year. WHAT FEEDBACK HAVE YOU HAD FROM CUSTOMERS? It’s been extremely positive. I strive for customer satisfaction and most of my AQUABION® installations are from other customers leaving positive reviews, friends
of people I installed one for already or word of mouth. AQUABION® has been a game changer in my own home. I don’t believe in installing any product in my home that would be ineffective and once you explain to customers how they work, what to expect and get them to compare salt-water softeners, AQUABION® will always come out on top. FOCUS ON HEAT PUMPS
HEAT PUMP INSTALLATIONS HAVE BEEN GROWING AT A SLOWER PACE IN NORTHERN IRELAND, WHICH HAS NO GOVERNMENT SUPPORT SCHEME ON PAR WITH GB OR IRELAND…
2024 was a record year for small-scale renewables
A record-breaking past year for small-scale renewables has included a 43% increase in heat pump installations, according to UK quality mark MCS. MCS’ Data Dashboard indicates more than 260,000 certified installations including heat pumps, solar and battery storage were completed in UK homes and small businesses last year, up 7% on 2023. Total certified installation numbers in the UK have now passed two million, highlighting a growing commitment to renewable technologies for heating and powering homes and businesses. Heat pumps saw a record-breaking rise in 2024 with almost 60,000 certified installations bringing the total number of certified heat pump installations in the UK to over 275,000. Solar PV continues to lead the way as the most popular renewable technology with over 180,000 certified installations recorded last year, while battery storage saw record-breaking numbers with nearly 20,000 certified installations. Ian Rippin, CEO at MCS, said, “It’s fantastic to see the record-breaking uptake of renewable energy technologies across the UK. More consumers are making the switch to home-grown energy, placing their trust in MCS certified contractors to give them confidence in their renewable installations. “As the numbers rise and more people benefit from home-grown energy, it’s crucial that standards are maintained in order to continue the momentum. This is where MCS product and installation standards have a key role to play in building confidence as the UK transitions to net zero.” Responding to the certification figures, Hamid Salimi, Residential
Octopus Energy is reporting strong interest in its Craigavon-manufactured heat pump, but not in Northern Ireland where no government support is available.
Product Manager at Daikin, said, “We are confident the UK could get closer to, or even exceed the government’s target of up to 600,000 heat pumps if a few key areas are addressed by the government: increasing the number of qualified installers; boosting demand for heat pumps by tackling misinformation and effectively communicating their benefits; providing financial incentives like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme to encourage people to take the first step; and by addressing the cost disparity between electricity and gas.” Heat pump installations have been growing at a slower pace in Northern Ireland, which has no government support scheme on par
with the Boiler Upgrade Scheme in England and Wales, Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan Scheme or the Home Energy Upgrade Loan Scheme in the Republic of Ireland. Over 200,000 homeowners contacted Octopus Energy to enquire about a heat pump in 2024, up 144% from the previous year. However, the power company has highlighted the lack of any government support scheme in NI as preventing uptake of its Cosy 6 proprietary heat pump, which is manufactured in Craigavon. A NI Department for the Economy Consultation on support for low- carbon heating within residential buildings closed in January 2025. www.mcscertified.com
