How to Beat the Heat So You Can Stay Active
Our warm climate provides plenty of gorgeous days to get active. But it also brings its share of sweltering temperatures that make physical activity incredibly uncomfortable–not to mention potentially dangerous. Fortunately, you can do some simple things to manage the heat effectively so you aren’t tempted to spend the hot weather camped out in front of a fan. Five Tips for Staying Active When the Temperature Soars 1. Drink Water: You probably already know this one, but it bears repeating. Make sure to drink water before, during, and after physical activity to help regulate body temperature and prevent dehydration. 2.Time Your Workouts: Schedule workouts or other physical activity in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are lower.
3.Modify Your Workouts: If it’s an especially hot day, don’t feel like you have to perform your typical workout, especially if it’s intense. We suggest keeping a list of hot-day activities (such as swimming or stretching) you can pull out when needed. 4.Use Cooling Techniques: Even if you don’t have access to A/C, you can still stay cool with cooling packs or misting fans. During breaks, you can also apply a damp towel to your neck or wrists. 5.Listen To Your Body: This is one of our most important tips. Know the signs of heat exhaustion, which include dizziness, nausea, or excessive sweating. If you experience any symptoms, stop your activity immediately and cool down. Remember, We’re Here to Help Staying active is essential, but so is safety. If the heat is really troublesome, our physiotherapists can help develop a plan that keeps you active without risk.
