Catapult Learning seeks to help students in grades 2 through 12 to overcome their educational challenges. Catapult’s schools are small — the High Roads School of Baltimore County will teach approximately 50 students, and the High Roads School of Anne Arundel County will teach approximately 70 students — for every two students, there is one staff member.

Catapult aims to teach students the skills they need to reenter the public school system. Certain students can begin plan- ning for this transition within a few months, others stay at Catapult for a few years, and some students finish their education at Catapult. “Ultimately, the goal is to stabilize behav- iors, improve the academics, and then return the students to the least restrictive environment, which is to their public school settings,” said Josh Strzegowski, the director of special projects at Catapult Learning, Inc. To do this, the school has a program that integrates positive reinforcement, academic interventions, behavior modifi- cations, occupational therapy, social work, speech and language therapy, and, at times, psychiatric services to help students reach their full potential.

“Everything is individualized,” Strzegowski said. “Every kid has his or her own tailored academic plan. We do rotations, which means we present the work in 20-minute blocks, and all the curriculum is adapted or modified to the student’s functioning level. So if a student is an 8th grader and he or she is learning on a 6th grade level, then we take the 8th grade curriculum and modify it to meet the student’s needs.” St. John Properties’ role in this process is to provide a comfortable environment for

the students. In the case of Catapult Learning, a new facility is being constructed at Greenleigh at Crossroads in Baltimore County. Their existing location at I-97 Business Park in Anne Arundel County was recently expanded. “St. John has been a great partner with us as far as providing the appropriate facility,” Strzegowski explained. “They’ve done the build out for us. When we entered into the contract with them, they brought in a team of architects and engineers and designers and they built out the site to our exact needs. They’re great landlords to work with — they’re responsive to any concerns that we have.” With less time thinking about construction and more time spent with students, staff at Catapult Learning can plan for the best ways to help their incoming Baltimore and Anne Arundel County students.
