Mel and Gert Kartzmer OF BLESSED MEMORY
Our parents, Gert and Mel Kartzmer arrived in Miami to start a new life with their 2 little girls in 1958. Coming from strong cultural Jewish families themselves (they met while Mel was working for Gert’s family at the kosher hotel they owned in the Catskills), Gert and Mel raised us with Sunday school, Hebrew school, temple affiliation and all of the holiday traditions. Daughter Karen’s enthusiasm for the State of Israel initiated through
Hebrew School and USY spilled over to our parents who became involved with Jewish Federation. They went on their first mission to Israel right before the ‘73 war. Mel then went back to Israel during the war with several other men from Miami to work on army bases doing anything and everything that the soldiers did not have time to do. From that point on Gert and Mel became dedicated Federation supporters and leaders. Mel served as a member of the Board or Directors of GMJF for 19 years as well as participating on several committees
including administrative, Planning and Budget and High School in Israel. Perhaps Mel’s most important legacy was that of Chairman of Foundation of Philanthropies and managing the Charitable Foundation. Mel still found time to serve as Pacesettor Chairman and Big Gifts Chairman and participate with Gert in 13 missions to Israel. Gert was an active member in Women’s division also serving on various committees as well as
a recognized member of Lion of Judah. Gert passed away in January 2014, Mel succeeded her in June 2017. They passed on to us the importance of Tzedakah, of support for Jewish charities and the State of Israel. Sheryl Kartzmer Goldberg Karen Kartzmer Mazala
