T H E K I N G ’ S B U S I N E S S Jesus.” Dr. Rail asserts in his book that “ this was published in ‘The Chris tian Workers’ Magazine’ XVII, 554, just before our entrance into the war for democracy.” On my attention be ing called to this by Rev. Loren M, Ed wards of Denver, Colorado, who had attacked me in a sermon in Denver for calling our Lord Jesus “ Kaiser,” I wrote to Dr. Gray, the editor of “The Christian Workers’ Magazine,” asking him to send me a copy of that magazine of the date mentioned. Dr. Gray re plied that they did not have an extra copy, but sent me this quotation from it, and added that this was a part of longhand notes of a convention. I do not believe it is a correct report. Cer tainly, no fair-minded man will hold a person responsible for longhand reports of what he says, i. e., hold him respon sible for every word used. I think that what I said was, “ They had a great democracy in France at the time of the French Revolution and there was an orgy of murder and cruelty. What we need is not a democracy but an em peror, but there is only one emperor that will bring peace and that is not Kaiser Wilhelm but Emperor Jesus.” It was quite natural that a longhand reporter should have gotten it “ Kaiser Jesus.” But even supposing that I did say it, it certainly does not, and to any man who desired to be fair would not, bear the meaning that Prof. Rail puts upon it. It was evident from the whole sen tence, that the word “ Kaiser” is used in its historic sense. The German (word) “ Kaiser” was de rived from the Latin “ Caesar,” and was the official title of the emperors at, and after, the time of Caesar Augustus. In the earlier part of the sentence, I have said, “What we need is an Emper or,” then I go on immediately to say in the sentence as quoted by yon, “ But there is only one emperor that will bring peace and that is not Kaiser Wil helm, it is Kaiser Jesus,” in which a

¿«llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllilllllllllillllt’IIIIIIIIIIMIHK ! DESPICABLE I I PROPAGANDA | A Note from OR. R. A. TORREY s T S iiiiiiiiaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitiiiiiiiiiiM iiiiiiiiiiniiin In our July issue, we rose to the defense o f Dr. R. A. Torrey, who had been charged by several Methodist editors with “ fre quently referring in the mpst unhesitat ing manner to Jesus as ‘Kaiser Jesus.’ ” We stated that Dr. T orrey had been un able to recall ever having used such an expression. It has since developed that Prof. Harris Franklin Rail was the orig inator of these attacks upon Dr. Torrey. Prof.- Rail writes us that he found the alleged statement in notes o f a convention held several years ago at Moody Institute and published in the Moody Institute m ag azine. Since the title “ Kaiser” has be come especially odious the world around, Prof. Rail evidently deemed it an oppor tune time to bring out this statement for the purpose o f creating prejudice against Dr. Torrey and other premillennialists. Even had Dr. Torrey on one occasion spoken of “ Kaiser (which means Emper or) Jesus,” we maintain that to build upon it such inferences as Prof. Rail does, could be called nothing short of despicable. The enemies of the truth o f our Lord’s com ing have made every possible use of Prof. Rail’s suggestion, as he m ight have hoped, but we are quite confident that such methods w ill gain little for the cause o f modernism, and their persistence in the use o f slander and falsehood w ill in time bring their cause the discredit which it so richly deserves. The follow ing from Dr: Torrey w ill explain the situation, so far as this particular charge is concerned. (K . L. B.) which you stated that, “Dr. Torrey could not at any time recall ever having used the word ‘Kaiser’ in connection with ‘Jesus.’ I The person that writes you has called attention to Dr. Harris Franklin Rail’s statement in his book, “ Modern Premillennialism and the Christian Hope,” Page 153. Dr. Rail in that book quotes me as saying, “ We may say we need a great democracy. They had a great democracy in France at the time of the Great Revolution and the streets ran with blood. What we need is an emperor, but there is only one emperor that will bring peace, and that is not Kaiser Wilhelm, it is Kaiser b Y attention lias been Called to the fact that someone has writ ten you in consequence of an editorial in the July issue in
