King's Business - 1922-09

T H E K I N G ’S B U S I N E S S _clear distinction Is drawn between the kind of a Kaiser we do not want and the kind of a Kaiser (or Emperor) we do. It was certainly unfair on the part of Dr. Rail, to thus clearly distort the mean ing of my words, the meaning that is unmistakably evident in the connection in which it is used, even supposing that I used the words attributed to me. ■„ Dr. Rail in his book in this immedi ate connection makes a comment which is so evidently unfair that I do not need to point out the unfairness of it but simply quote it, viz., “ This was pub lished in ‘The Christian Workers’ Maga zine’ just before our entrance into the war for democracy. It is suggestive of Dr. Torrey’s conception alike of de mocracy and of Christianity that the French Revolution represents to him ‘a great democracy’ and that he can refer to our Lord as ‘Kaiser Jesus.’ ” May I add that what I actually have said about the need of a democracy and the need of an autocracy, and the way in which I have actually and repeatedly used the word “ Kaiser” and to whom I have actually applied it, is shown by my printed books. Of course, I am will ing to stand responsible for my printed books but not for the verbal accuracy of long hand reports by others, which re ports I have never seen nor had the opportunity to correct. Here is what I say on Page 44 of my book, “ Jesus, The Prophet, The Priest, The King:” “ This earth in that day is not to be ruled by a President, or by a Senate, or by a parliament, or even by a constitu tional monarch, but by an absolute mon arch, by a King; but a King who is per fectly fit to reign, which no earthly mon arch ever has been; a King who shall reign in infinite wisdom and infinite righteousness and infinite love; the One who died to save all mankind, ruling over all mankind.” In another sentence (Page 38) in this address on, “ Jesus, The Prophet, The Priest, The King” I contrast Jesus as King with the Kaiser and all world

conquerors of the past. “ The un realized dreams of Nebuchadnezzar, Cyrus, Xerxes, Alexander the Great, Augustus, Diocletian, Napoleon and Kaiser Wilhelm of a world-wide empire will be realized at last in One who is fit to exercise such power, King Jesus.” In this same book I do call a “ coming one” “ Kaiser,” but it is not our Lord Jesus. Here are my words* on Page 42: “ Today some are flatter ing themselves that shrewd politicians and diplomats can form a League of Nations and that will end war. Indeed, when we went into the present war, we were told it was ‘a war to end war.’ But no thinking man is as sure of that as he was even a year ago and no one who studies his Bible believes it for a moment. He knows that God’s Word says that, ‘even unto the end’ of this dispensation ‘shall be war’ and that ‘desolations are determined’ (Dan. 9: 26). He knows that the most awful war of this world’s history is not just behind us but just ahead of us; that Kaiser Wilhelm is nothing either in power or ‘frightfulness’ to Kaiser An tichrist, ‘the Prince that shall come’ (Dan. 9 :26 ); that The Beast of Berlin is nothing to The Beast of Revelation.” ROME AND THE BIBLE Rowland Hill, the famous preacher, in alluding to the excuses of the Papists for keeping the Bible as much as possi ble from the people, because there were some things in it “ hard to be under stood (2 Pet. 3:16), said, as he bent forward, leaning one elbow on the desk and putting on his look of peculiar arch ness, “ What would you think of a father whose little boy should come to him hungry, and say, ‘Father, I want some meat,’ and he should reply, though he had a good joint in the cupboard, ‘No, my son, I won’t give you any meat, be cause you can’t eat all the bone.’ ?”
