He declared that every step by which our nation advanced to independence was distin­ guished by some token of Providential agency. If the Bible is ignored or re­ jected our civilization will decay and our nation will be destroyed. It is the concurrent testimony of missionaries that no matter what degree of culture men achieve, they do not rise above the vices and superstitions of the heathen life unless they receive Jesus Christ as their Saviour and accept the teachings of the Bible. A leading historian de­ clares that history shows no example of mere civilization elevating a sunken people. “ Christianity is not the bloom but the root. Culture is not the root but the bloom of Christianity.” Apart from the light of God’s Holy Word there is no inherent power in politics, com­ merce, art or education to purify and uplift humanity. Verses seven, eight and nine of the nineteenth Psalm give the characteristics and moral effects of the law of God. It is perfect, lacking noth­ ing and meeting every need of the hu­ man soul. It is sure, unfailing and perfectly reliable’ as a spiritual guide. It is right, an exact expression of the moral integrity and righteousness of God. It is pure, without stain or taint or any such thing. It is clean, there is nothing in it that needs to be removed. It exceeds in value the costliest of earth’s substances, outweighing even virgin gold. It converts the soul, by means of it the life and spirit of the be­ liever are restored- It makes the sim­ ple wise, enlightening all who need spir­ itual direction. It rejoices the heart, all who receive and believe it have con­ sciences void of offence toward God and man, and therefore great serenity of mind. It enlightens the mind for all it» teaching is in accordance with truth. It is true and righteous altogether and since the obligation to obey it is per­ petual, it endures forever. .
