Striving to Stay in the Game Pickleball Perils

Call a meeting of any chiropractor group these days, and one sport is more likely to come up than any other: pickleball.

chiropractor who plays in the Pro Pickleball Association tour, a series of events where top players battle for titles and rankings at 26 tour stops nationwide. He told us he is seeing a rapid increase in injuries among pickleball players, especially those over 60, on the tour and in his professional practice. Older pickleball players often aggravate plantar fasciitis and neuropathy. Visitors to our booth were intrigued by the AIRfeet RELIEF moving insoles we had on display. These innovative products can be placed over orthotic devices or directly on the shoe’s sole, and many pickleball players wear them to cushion their feet, ankles, knees, and lower back. We also carry Biofreeze’s professional analgesic products, including gels and individually wrapped, flexible patches. Biofreeze is the only topical analgesic endorsed for treating sports injuries by the American Chiropractic Association and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Chiropractors also treat plantar fasciitis and neuropathy with light therapy. We carry the DNA Vibe device, which emits red light, near-infrared light, magnetic vibrations, and micro- vibrations. Clinicians using the DNA Vibe with laser therapy are seeing better results. The DNA Vibe also improves profits for chiropractors who sell the device directly to patients in their offices or charge patients to use it for individual therapy sessions. Chiropractors’ holistic approach is well-suited to providing preventive and healing therapies to aging pickleball athletes, and a growing number of clinicians are focusing on these active seniors in their marketing efforts. In addition to foot injuries, sprained ankles and pulled hamstrings are common among pickleball players. Others suffer pickleball elbow, a strain in a large tendon on the outside of the elbow similar to tennis elbow. To reduce the risk of injury, players need education about the value of resistance training, aerobics, and exercises to improve balance and flexibility. Aging athletes also benefit from learning effective warm-up and cool-down routines and the preventive effects of dynamic stretching. No one is better suited to provide this education than chiropractors. We are always looking for new therapies for strains, sprains, neuropathy, and other conditions you are encountering in your practice. Please call us for more information on our products or to discuss your needs; we would love to hear from you.

Participation in pickleball, the nation’s fastest-growing sport, is rising annually by about 50%–80%. In recognition

of April as National Foot Awareness Month, we are

looking at the growing rate of foot and other injuries among pickleball players and how the nation’s chiropractors treat them.

According to a survey of U.S. hospitals, an estimated 19,000

pickleball players are injured every year, more than 90% of them age 50 or older. Many pickleball players last played sports a long time ago, meaning their bodies are at an elevated risk for foot problems, muscle strain, and overuse injuries.

Many of the chiropractors who visited our booth

at the recent Parker Seminar convention in Las Vegas were either treating

pickleball players, playing the sport themselves, or both. One of our visitors was a

5 Exciting Sporting Events in April April is one of the most exciting months of the year for all kinds of sports fans! Whether you follow the hushed telecasts of PGA golf or the wild excitement of the UFC and NCAA men’s and women’s basketball, April has something to get excited about!

Parker Seminar, an international conference of 5,000 chiropractors and other health care professionals, was an excellent way to fast-forward my learning. The information, product innovations, and motivational speeches offered at the conference armed me with a wealth of insights for the coming year. In addition to meeting many chiropractors and learning about their needs and concerns, I also attended a presentation by a popular motivational speaker, David Goggins.

GOLF Golf enthusiasts are always excited for April as it hosts one of the year’s biggest golf tournaments: The Masters Tournament, from April 8-14. All the greats will compete for a sky-high prize in the warm Georgia sun, including Tiger Woods and Bubba Watson. BASKETBALL Stakes are high in April for college basketball — it’s time for the men’s and women’s Final Four! The chaos of March Madness is over, leading to a clash of titans. The women’s Final Four starts on Friday, April 5, with the championship game on Sunday in Cleveland, Ohio. The remaining four men’s teams face off on Saturday, Feb. 6, and the final two play for the championship Monday night, with all games in Glendale, Arizona. FOOTBALL The 2024 football season doesn’t start until September, but the NFL Draft in April does more to shake up NFL rosters than any other time of year. From April 25–27, you can watch your favorite college stars take their first steps as a pro. Fans everywhere love to watch the spectacle and boo or cheer for their team’s picks.

Goggins is a retired Navy SEAL and the only man to have completed SEAL training, Army Ranger School, and Air Force Tactical Air Controller training. He is a champion ultra-endurance athlete who has finished in the top five in many of the 70 ultra-distance races he has run. These achievements are remarkable on their own, but Goggins accomplished them after overcoming a past life as a severely overweight couch potato.

Goggins spoke about the core attitudes he says were vital to his achievements. He stressed the importance of nourishing

AIRfeet President Wayne Purcells displayed AIRfeet RELIEF 02 moving insoles at our Chiro1Source booth at the recent Parker Seminar convention in Las Vegas. Many of the roughly 700 chiropractors and other visitors who stopped by stepped onto AIRfeet’s floor-mounted AIRboard demo platform. Rocking back and forth on the platform’s two stationary AIRfeet insoles, they experienced the same sensation as if they were wearing the insole. One woman started laughing when she tried the AIRboard because she could not explain the sensation. “This is just weird,” she said. That is exactly what the AIRfeet package promises — the “best weird feeling.” As the wearer shifts their weight or moves the foot, the air inside the insole moves, creating

For professionals in chiropractic, Goggins can serve as a motivating example to suggest to patients. He has written about how developing a personalized routine of stretching exercises helped him prevent injuries and heal his back and hamstring problems. His books and videos have inspired many fans to begin stretching before and after exercise. Clearly, a bit of Goggins’ self-discipline could help many amateur athletes, post-surgical patients, and injury victims accelerate their own healing. And for growth- focused chiropractors who enjoy lifelong learning, inspiring examples like his can help bring an extra spark into their work.

a massaging effect that stimulates circulation and provides ergonomic comfort for people with plantar fasciitis; flat feet; neuropathy; and foot, ankle, or lower back pain.

The insoles were a hit among visitors to our booth, many who had sore feet from walking around at the 320,000-square-foot Caesars Forum Event Center. Some even bought AIRfeet the first day and then returned for more pairs or starter packs, saying their feet had been killing them until they slipped the insoles into their shoes. AIRfeet insoles are affordable and can be used as a complement to any orthotic device or simply slipped over a shoe’s insole. We recently began offering 20-pack and 40-pack AIRfeet RELIEF 02 Starter Packages. The product comes in two sizes that can be trimmed to fit any user, eliminating the need for chiropractors to carry a large inventory with various sizes. The company also provides single-insole samples and other helpful sales tools, including brochures and counter displays. Call us if you’d like more information about AIRfeet RELIEF 02 insoles or our new Starter Package sets! We have had excellent feedback on this product and will be happy to provide more information.

All April long, Holland sports the most beautiful colors in the world, and people from all over the globe go enjoy the Keukenhof Garden

Festival. This festival has occurred for 75 years, and as it’s only 30 minutes away from Amsterdam proper, you can experience the best of both worlds. Explore the thousands of tulips during the day and then spend time in the city, exploring the beautiful canals and shopping districts in the evening. Don’t worry if you miss the beautiful flowers; most of the city’s museums and hotels have tulips, too. SEVILLE, SPAIN Embark on an enchanting journey to Seville, where vibrant culture and passion come alive. Picture yourself strolling through cobblestone streets where you can immerse yourself in the parades that travel through the city during Holy Week. Brass bands build up to a beautiful celebration on Easter, and just two weeks later, the Feria de Abril begins. This fiesta is full of lively parties, even more music, and colorful costumes. Sevillanos on horseback and the clacking footwork of

flamenco dancers are captivating to watch, so don’t miss out by getting rained in.

MALTA Located to the south of mainland Europe in the Mediterranean Sea, Malta is part of an archipelago consisting of several islands, including Gozo and Comino. Because of its diverse cultures, you’ll hear Arab accents in the language as you pass Baroque architecture. Nature lovers, hikers, and landscape photographers alike can explore the rocky coastlines, impressive rock formations, and dazzling sea caves, such as the Blue Grotto (Malta), plus beautiful beaches like Ramia Bay (Gozo) and Ghajn Tuffieha Bay (Malta). However, the biggest advantage of traveling in Malta is that everything is in full bloom: green fields, blooming citrus trees, and beautiful flowers. If you go in spring, you’ll beat the tourists, too, as summer is peak season.
