WHIPLASH ISN’T A SMALL INJURY Here’s How to Recognize It
If you were involved in a car accident, there is a chance you might have whiplash. Whiplash isn’t necessarily a condition, but rather a cluster of symptoms that can appear immediately or with a delayed onset after a car accident. WHAT IS WHIPLASH? Whiplash occurs when your head or neck is subjected to a sudden, forceful back-and-forth or side-to-side motion. It is not a minor injury, so if you think you are suffering from whiplash after a car accident, there is a good chance that you are. The most common symptoms include sore or stiff neck, headache, neck strain, limited range of motion in the neck, strained neck muscles, tingling sensations (in the neck, back, or arms), unusual dizziness or drowsiness, pain or soreness in the shoulders or back, and overall soreness in the body. SHOULD I GO TO THE DOCTOR FOR WHIPLASH? If you have been involved in a car accident, especially a rear-end or side collision, it is imperative to seek medical attention as soon as possible. While someone may feel minor soreness after an accident and brush it off, delayed whiplash symptoms can occur later on. Whiplash injuries often result in severe pain leading to loss of income as your ability to work can become restricted due to loss of mobility. A doctor can evaluate you for whiplash symptoms and recommend treatment based on your injuries. Seeking medical attention after an accident also protects your right to recover financially as it shows you are doing all that you can to return to normal. A personal injury case is based on
your injuries, and those must be documented by a doctor first. Without seeking medical attention after an accident, your ability to obtain compensation for your injuries will be limited. Even if you seek medical attention after a car accident, not following doctors’ orders can decrease your chances of having a successful outcome with your personal injury case. HOW DO I FILE A PERSONAL INJURY CASE? After seeking medical attention for a car accident, the next step is to contact an experienced local personal injury lawyer. Florida law allows up to four years to make a legal claim for damages after a car accident. You are not required to wait until you have significant medical expenses due to an accident before making a claim. It is much more beneficial to make a claim as soon as any effects of the car accident are felt. Watermelon Jicama Salad
This late-summer salad hits every flavor note and is a great way to get acquainted with jicama, a root vegetable native to Mexico that you’ve probably passed numerous times in the produce section! It’s easy to prepare (just peel and eat) and has the crispness of an apple and the satisfying starch of potato.
Ingredients
• • • •
1 3-lb seedless watermelon
• • •
1/2 cup cilantro, coarsely chopped
1 small jicama
3 tbsp fresh lime juice Kosher salt, to taste
1 jalapeño pepper, thinly sliced
1 scallion, thinly sliced
Directions
1. Prepare the watermelon by removing the rind and cutting the melon into 2 1/2-by- 1/2-inch sticks. 2. Peel the jicama with a vegetable peeler, then cut it into sticks the same size as the watermelon. 3. In a large bowl, combine the watermelon and jicama with jalapeño, scallion, cilantro, and lime. Sprinkle with kosher salt, toss gently to combine, taste, and adjust seasoning.
