Jerome Schulman OF BLESSED MEMORY

I have been living in Miami since I was three. My mother, Emma Schulman, was active in the Sisterhood of Congregation Beth David, which was like a second home to our family. Every Friday night, we attended services, which was how I connected with my Jewish heritage and Israel. As a High School student, I participated in a Habonim program in Israel in 1949. I lived and worked on a Kibbutz in the Negev, only one year after Israel became the Jewish State. I was such a strong and proud Zionist and wondered how someone could call themselves Jewish and not ever have spent time in Israel. Back in Miami, I met my beautiful wife, Jane, through a Young Men’s Hebrew Association (YMHA) social at the Surfcomber. We were married for 54 years and had two sons, Robert and Kenny. Living in Westchester, our family’s second home became Temple Judea where we attended services and got involved in Jewish life. Both Robert and Kenny became a Bar-Mitzvah. Robert’s ceremony took place in Temple Judea and Kenny’s was at the Western Wall in Jerusalem. Unfortunately, Jane, Robert and Kenny have since passed away. An only child, I don’t have any close family in town but my fellow

congregants at Temple Judea have taken on this role. I still drive from Aventura to Coral Gables every Shabbat to participate in Shabbat Services. Everyone has their tragedy to overcome. I have sometimes questioned why I am still here and someone told me that God has put me on this earth to do good deeds, which is what I have tried to do. I volunteer as a patient advocate twice a week at Memorial Hospital in Broward County in addition to the gifts I have made to the Greater Miami Jewish Federation and Temple Judea through my will. Growing up in Miami during the Jim Crow Era, I remember when it was so not easy being Jewish. The Federation was an oasis in a desert, providing assistance to anyone in the Jewish community who was in need. My parents emigrated from Russia to the United States thanks to the lifesaving assistance they received from the Federation and the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS).
