Collaboration on Experiential Learning Device Math Professor Erich Mueller put his woodworking skills to use in support of a colleague, Dr. Joe Bernstein, who is teaching design and analysis of algorithms. One classical puzzle that can be solved using methods essential to that class is the Tower of Hanoi. The goal is to move the entire
stack of disks from one rod to a different rod, but one must a) move one disk at a time; b) you can move the upper disk to the top of another stack (or an empty rod); and c) no disk may be placed on top of another that is smaller. The puzzle was invented by a French mathematician in 1889 – the year of our founding. NonProfit Students Assisting Numerous Organizations Nonprofit Management Students in NPFT430 Fundraising and Resource Development are partnering with nonprofit organizations to complete a comprehensive fundraising analysis for their organizations; including mission review, goals and objectives, SWOT, PEST, collaborative, competitive, internal, external and market analysis and assessment matrix for their existing resource development efforts. At the end of the semester, students present their findings and provide the organizations with a deliverable for the organization. This semester students are partnered with the KC Zoo, Salt Fork YMCA, Camp MITIOG and Wonderland Camp. Honors College Visits Truman Library; Big February Calendar Dr. Chris Libby, dean of the Honors College, took the MVC Honors College students to the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library for a visit on January 24. Afterward, they indulged on Kansas City barbecue. They were joined by Elizabeth Bellamy, vice president for academic affairs, her husband Page, and MVC trustee Rob Ravenhill and his wife, Jan. The Honors College plans to visit the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art of Art in Kansas City on February 18 and Stark Caverns in Eldon, Mo on February 25. Encourage Students to Participate in Next Symposium Planning efforts are under way for the Spring Student Research Symposium! Please encourage your students to submit their work. Deadline for submission is March 25. Please watch our campus TVs for workshops around preparing abstracts and academic posters.
Scholarships Awarded at Student Research Symposium
More than 130 students shared their academic, creative, and professional work Dec. 4 at the Missouri Valley College Student Research Symposium. This was the first symposium highlighted by the presentation of four $500 academic scholarships to the Excellence in Student Research winners.Top prizes went to: Felipe Souza and Raphael Battini for “Sensory Rooms;” Sage Carter for “Irish Astronomy: Analyzing the Ancient Irish Passage Tombs;” Shane Rodriguez for “Logo Branding Process;” and Alexis Livingston for “Diabetic Ketoacidosis: Utilizing the Anion Gap for Treatment.”. President Joe Parisi gave kudos to the winners, and also stated he appreciated the hard work of the event’s 25 faculty and staff volunteers.
Accounting Program Spreads Holiday Cheer
MVC’s Accounting Program spread some holiday cheer this week by filling Christmas stockings for students and the Whiteman Air Force Base 509th Support Squadron. The student stockings were handed out Tuesday evening at the Bistro by our Alumni Board.
New Hands-On Spring Course: Voices of Arrow Rock Production Dr. Michael Kateman, an adjunct professor in communication studies, has developed an experiential and service learning course crossing the disciplines of theatre, history, communication studies, English, business, and non-profit management. “As creator and producer of Voices of Arrow Rock , I am ecstatic to partner with the college in offering students who are interested in playwriting, marketing, strategic communications, theatre production and management, fundraising, and grant-writing (this) hands-on experience,” said Kateman. The course is INDS 349-01 and will be Tuesday-Thursday from 12:15 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Voices of Arrow Rock is a readers theatre series that brings to life underrepresented voices of the historic village’s past.
