Last month, we talked with the folks responsible for our Grounds -- all 350 acres -- and focused on our need for a new irrigation system. We have also mentioned over the last several months that, if we have to do the irrigation system, perhaps we address the shortcomings of the North Course at the same time. So, let’s talk about that and some other golf-related items. Here is the transcript of an interview recently conducted with Judge Meghan Adams, our Golf Chair, and Michael Shank, our Director of Golf. Q. We understand why we so desperately need to replace the irrigation system all across our property before it’s too late. What does that have to do with the North Course? Does it really need to be re-done? A. First of all, nothing has been decided. We don’t have final plans from our architect or bids from contractors. Above all, the Board has not approved any expenditures, any plans or anything else. We are certainly considering this in light of the irrigation replacement, but nothing is at all certain. Having said that, we perceive this as an opportunity to make improvements to the North Course that will have long-lasting positive impacts on the Club. Our architect, Andrew Green, is one of the best in the world at what he does, and we are lucky to have him taking a look at the North Course. Over the past decade, Mr. Green has been responsible for renovations of many championship venues, including Inverness Club, Oak Hill Country Club’s East Course, Congressional Country Club's Blue Course, Interlachen Country Club, Scioto Country Club, East Lake Golf Club, and Chevy Chase Club. Since we are compelled to make irrigation-related infrastructure improvements to the North Course, we are excited to see what Mr. Green can offer in terms of design improvements. From our point of view, we imagine this will be an opportunity to improve a number of items including: replacing bunkers and cart paths, minimizing forced carries over water on our family-friendly course, address overly severe greens, add better Family Tee locations for our juniors, and provide more appropriate green and gold tee yardages while adding some length to our blue tees. It may also be an opportunity to improve our practice facilities. Q. Hang on a second. We love the North Course and it’s a great alternative to the South Course for high-handicappers, juniors and other mere mortals. Is the new and improved North Course just going to be another course I can’t make a decent score on? A. We love it, too, and we would never eliminate the family-friendly alternative to the South Course. We don’t yet have final drawings from our architect, but the answer to your question is most definitely no. Andrew Green is the best in the business and he knows what we are after. We want a North Course that is fun for everyone, visually fantastic, challenging for the low-handicappers, approachable for the high-handicappers and a great place for our juniors to learn and grow to love the game of golf. There will be multiple tee boxes, so no one should feel out of a hole before even teeing off. The North Course will always make for a great round of golf for anyone and everyone, and we expect it will get friendlier for new players and high-handicappers, while providing more challenge for accomplished players. Q. Why do we have to do it now? A. For starters, the North Course has not been meaningfully updated since it was built during the Kennedy Administration. We would never take on a huge project like this just for the sake of doing it. But since the irrigation replacement is a non-negotiable necessity, it would be a huge mistake to lay out irrigation for a North Course that we know needs improvements.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE | DAVID WILKS Q. So what should we expect from Andrew Green’s new design? A. Mr. Green’s current thinking would maintain much of what the course currently has while making changes that will heighten the player’s experience at all levels of play. His philosophy in general is to highlight the best aspects of the land a course sits on. We believe the North Course sits on a beautiful piece of land, and that Mr. Green can greatly improve our course and member experience. Q. When will this start and how long will it take? A. If everything works together in our favor, construction would begin sometime in the Spring of 2026 and take about a year. We would be able to play the course again at the beginning of the 2027 season. But, again, nothing has been decided and nothing is certain. Q. Are you as deliriously excited about warm weather and the official golf season to begin as we are? What do you have planned for this season? A. We are excited for Spring! We look forward to opening the South Course next week on Tuesday, April 8. After that, our golf schedule is off and running with GAP and WGAP matches, weekly women’s golf, our men’s golf calendar, junior classes, and coaching and club fitting opportunities. 2025 promises to be a terrific year of golf at the Club. Q. Some of us are new to golf or new to the Club. Where do we even begin? A. Please stop in to the Golf Shop so we can get acquainted and start you on your way. We promise to make your experience easy and fun. In the meantime, please explore the Golf page on the Club’s website, where you will find a section called “New to Golf? Spring Greetings, Traditionally, April is when the weather improves, and outdoor activities begin taking center stage. Men’s and ladies organized golf activities get started and tennis activity shifts outside. Work to prepare the Club’s facilities for the upcoming summer season also begins and in general, your use of the Club will increase significantly. We’ll also begin welcoming back those who have spent the winter away. This month’s Bulletin contains all the details on spring programs, events, and activities. While I hope you’ll take a moment to review it thoroughly, it seems that once again, there are a multitude of topics that are probably best shared as “bullet points”. Recognizing that all of them apply to some, and some of them apply to all, please read carefully to determine which are important to you. Beginning Tuesday, April 1st, full clubhouse operations resume. This includes the return of daily lunch service in the Grill & Tavern as well as the luncheon buffet in Pub37. In anticipation of good spring weather, we will prepare the outdoor patios to open as soon as conditions permit. Remember that tables on any outdoor patio venue are never reserved. The 2025 By-laws/Rules handbook has been updated and posted to the website. Non-electronic versions may be acquired by stopping by the front desk. As always, it contains a few adjustments to reflect the current use of your club. Social events for the month include: Frogs Leap Wine Dinner; Easter Activities; Live music in Pub37; Spring Food & Wine tasting. Details can be found in this newsletter. Enjoy a walk through your club’s History now displayed in our new “Heritage Hallway”. The replacement of the floor in Café 1901 has been re-scheduled for the week of April 21st. It will be necessary to completely close the venue during replacement. Our “New and Improved” Website that syncs with our enhanced Mobile App has gone live. Make sure that you explore the workings to take full advantage of all it offers. Speaking of Mobile devices - it seems a reminder would be helpful that when at the club please be sure to keep yours in silent mode. Additionally, it is worth noting that this “silent” spirit extends to all electronic devices, in all areas of the club – indoors and out. The South course opens for the season on Tuesday, April 8th. The Ladies 18-hole organization will hold their season opener that day as well. The 9-hole Ladies get started on the 23rd with their opening breakfast/play day. Men’s GAP matches begin on Sunday the 13th. The Women’s GAP matches get started the week of the 21st and extend into May. Men’s golf won’t hold their official opening event until May 9h, after the GAP matches are completed. Now that the golf season is underway, please keep in mind two simple thoughts. Carts damage turf, so be mindful of how and where you drive yours. Also, play “ready golf” and keep up with the group ahead of you! Preparations are underway to get the outdoor tennis courts ready for another season. Several of our clay courts should be open this week and the remainder being available the week of the 7th. The grass courts won’t open until May. With April begins a new food minimum cycle. If you are one of the few who struggled to fulfill their minimum, you may wish to reconsider your selection of how to satisfy this obligation. Perhaps switching to the pre-pay annual will be more effective. The golf course snack bars will be open on the “honor system” for the first few weeks of the season until activity picks up when normal staffing will occur. “What’s new?” Our communications team is preparing a roster that highlights, department by department, all the changes and improvements for 2025. Some are minor, some are major, but all are the result of our efforts to continually adjust club facilities and operations to satisfy the wants and needs of our membership. If you think your club never changes, you’ll be amazed. As use of the club increases, so does the traffic in the parking lots. Drivers – please slow down; Pedestrians – use caution! Please don’t drive while distracted by your mobile device. April promises to be an exciting month with lots going on. I hope you’ll find the time to enjoy the beauty of spring at your club. FROGS LEAP WINE DINNER
SAUNA IS HERE! The Sauna is located in the Ladies Locker Room and the heated hours run from 6:15am - 2:00pm and 3:00pm-9:15pm. A typical sauna session is 15-20 minutes. If you’re a first timer, start with 5-10 minutes and gradually increase. Temperature cannot be adjusted.

Our Bluebird and Purple Martin monitoring program starts April 18th! We welcome all members to get involved and encourage you to click on the link below to sign up for the weekly monitoring of the boxes. About the Monitoring: Monitoring of the boxes involves going to each box on a weekly basis and recording what is found and doing certain maintenance items to better ensure that the nesting pairs have a greater chance of success. This process will take about an hour to do. It is easy. It is fun. It is beneficial. And you will become very attached to these beautiful creatures. About the Program: Wilmington Country Club has been certified as an Audubon Cooperative Wildlife Sanctuary since 2004 and has successfully grown its program to over 38 Bluebird boxes and Purple Martin Condos.

April 1, 2025: The Black Angels: The Untold Story of the Nurses Who Helped Cure Tuberculosis – by Maria Smilios. Denise Ferguson will lead the discussion for the April meeting It was 1929, and in a New York City sanatorium, a deadly disease was spreading while there was a dire nursing shortage. In the pre-antibiotic days tuberculosis stirred people’s darkest fears: it killed one in seven people. At Sea View, New York’s largest municipal hospital, White nurses began quitting in unison. Desperate to avert a public health crisis, City officials summoned Black southern nurses, luring them with promises of good pay, a career, and an escape from the strictures of Jim Crow. But after arriving, they found themselves on an isolated hilltop in the remote borough of Staten Island, and once again confronting racism. They were consigned to a woefully understaffed sanatorium, dubbed “the pest house,” where it was said that “no one left alive.” The Black Angels is a true story that spans the Great Depression, World War II, and beyond. It is the remarkable true story about fearless young women known by their patients as the “Black Angels.” For twenty years, they risked their lives working under appalling conditions while caring for New York’s poorest residents, who languished in wards, waiting to die, or became guinea pigs for experimental surgeries and often deadly drugs. However, despite their major role in desegregating the New York City hospital system—and their vital work in helping to find the cure for tuberculosis at Sea View—these nurses were completely erased from history. The Black Angels recovers the voices of these extraordinary women and puts them at the center of this riveting story, celebrating their legacy and spirit of survival. The story is also about health equity, who deserves good health care, and who lives or dies. It is about a time when 1 in 7 Americans had tuberculosis (TB). Although there is no vaccine for TB, it is curable, although a deadly disease. This is Maia Smilios first book, and it has won numerous awards, including winner of the Christopher Award and finalist of NPR Science, Gotham Book, among others.

Michael Shank Golf Course Guest Reminders As we begin the season, a few friendly reminders regarding guest play to help us better serve you: If you are planning to bring a guest, please call, (302) 655-6022, stop by the Golf Shop, or email golfshop@wilmingtoncc.com in advance before the day of play to arrange the round. On the day of play, all guests must be accompanied, and should be registered in the Golf Shop prior to the start of the round. A guest may be introduced three times annually, regardless of member host. Family guests may be introduced six times per year. Be aware that all guest rounds in season require a cart or caddie. Guest rounds with two or more regular guests must take a caddie. The Golf Shop will assist to arrange caddies. Kindly make these arrangements 48 hours in advance. Member foursomes with more than one guest on the South Course are restricted between 12:15 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Fridays, and before 11 a.m. on weekends and Holidays. There is no restriction Tuesday to Thursday on the South Course, or any time on the North Course. There is no guest play permitted on Mondays.

Handicap Posting Season Starts April 1 Reminder that our handicap posting season begins April 1. All rounds played should be posted as handicap rounds. A few notes on handicaps: Any member who wishes to have a handicap should contact the Golf Shop. A total of 54 holes (three 18-hole or six 9-hole rounds) must be played to establish an official Handicap Index. Scores from stroke play, match play, and team formats where you play your own ball are acceptable, as long as you play by the Rules of Golf and another person is present during the round. A player should submit their score as soon as possible on the day of play, after completion of their round, and before midnight. In the event that you fail to post on the same day, the score should still be posted. Rounds played alone should not be posted for handicap purposes. Handicaps update daily. See the GHIN app for your current handicap. This will vary based on the tee played. There is no longer an adjustment for players playing from different tees. Your maximum score on any hole for posting is net double bogey. That is, double bogey, plus any handicap strokes you receive on that hole. Example: A player with a Course Handicap of 10 receives one stroke on holes allocated 1 through 10. On a par 4 with a stroke index of 5, their net double bogey max is 7 (double bogey +1).
Golf Club Fitting Currently in the Golf Shop we have club fitting tools for 2025 Titleist, Callaway, TaylorMade, Ping, Mizuno and XXIO products. Call the Golf Shop to schedule a complementary fitting with lead club fitter Ryan Rucinski (rrucinski@wilmingtoncc.com), or any member of the Professional Staff. We are also conducting several upcoming Spring Fitting Days. In addition to complementary club fitting, we sell all golf clubs for MAP price, the lowest available price on new golf clubs. When starting a hole but not finishing it, record the score most likely to be made. For an 18-hole score to be acceptable for handicap purposes, a minimum of 10 holes must be played. When a player plays 10-17 holes, a Score Differential is created based on the holes played to produce an 18-hole Score Differential. When a player plays between 10-17 holes, they are required to post their scores hole- by-hole so the appropriate Score Differential can be calculated from the holes that were played to combine with the expected score for the holes not played. For a 9-hole score to be acceptable for handicap purposes, all 9 holes must be played. 9-hole scores will be converted to an 18- hole Score Differential for immediate use. If a player has not played at least 9 holes, the score is not acceptable for handicap purposes.

PGA Junior League Golf We are excited to begin another season of PGA Junior League Golf, with registration now open. This developmental program is a terrific way to get junior golfers of all abilities, from ages 8-17, involved in the game. PGA Junior League Golf is a team effort, includes numbered jerseys, practices and matches and also has an “All-Star” post-season team! We anticipate having two teams represent Wilmington Country Club in 2025. We look to continue with our 13U team and start a (new!) 17U team this year as well. Each team will be limited to 16 players. While formatted as a competition, the main goal of the program is to develop golf skills while promoting a casual, team environment with an emphasis on fun! Matches are played with twelve players, and we will add four additional players per team expecting that some juniors will not be able to attend all matches. We cannot guarantee each junior will play every match.
Please note, parent participation is required and vital to the success of the Junior League. Please plan to drive players to away matches and stay at matches for the duration of the match to support & chaperone our team.
Who: Junior golfers ages 8-17 of all abilities (and supportive parents!). All juniors are welcome regardless of experience.
What: Approximately six 9-hole matches with groups playing a two-person scramble, match-play format. Also included are six or more practices and self-scrimmages. Practices will be supervised, including structured activities and professional instruction, working on all aspects of the game.
When: April through July. Practices begin in April and matches are June-July. The exact dates of the match and practice schedule will be available soon.
Where: Matches will be played at various area courses. The 13U division will compete at Fieldstone, Bidermann, Concord CC, and DuPont CC. The 17U division will have some additional travel, playing at venues like Bellewood, Blue Bell, Cedarbrook, DuPont, and Rolling Green.

GROUNDS | JON URBANSKI, DIRECTOR OF GOLF COURSES AND GROUNDS
The previous month was stellar in terms of the amount of work accomplished by the grounds staff. While some aspects were buttoned up, a couple tasks that began towards the end of the month will be finalized during the first few days of April.
A major winter season objective crossed off the list was the aerification of all South Course rough areas. This is the first time ever that all 100+/- acres were treated for this coring in the history of the Club at our present location. When the course opens on April 8 , some remnants of this process will linger and will be chopped up by our mowers over the first few weeks of the month. A winter goal for us that was unable to be accomplished due to frozen conditions was raising the sprinklers in the South Course fairways. We did manage to raise the sprinklers on holes 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, and about half of the fairway on number 3. This is a very laborious process and all-in-all, this was a great start to this improvement. th During the month of March, we deep tined the South Course greens and began vertically mowing the fairways to reduce thatch accumulation. A similar process will occur on the tees, and we will not core any surfaces prior to the opening of the course as our fall aerifications continue to provide great results with more aggressive techniques and less abrasive measures needed each spring. The same can be said for the North Course programming for aeration. By all accounts, when we perform the North Course aerification, our techniques will be less invasive, which will speed healing time on the back-end. The North Course is scheduled for aerification from April 14 through 16 , with 9 holes to open on the 17 . th th th The bullet points below reflect a few of the activities that will occur during the month of April: The clay tennis courts will undergo their annual spring remediation of the surfaces, and we hope to have the courts playable by tax day, April 15 . th Mulch will be added to all landscape beds. Training, training, and more training. We will have an influx of new faces to begin the month and most of our new seasonal hires have never worked in a club setting. Getting them to know the property, along with policies procedures will take some time. But we fully expect a quick learning curve. We spoke of last month the need to diagnose numerous irrigation issues. Most of these occurrences are on the South Course, namely #1 green complex, 6 tee and green complexes, and 16 green complex. Upon inspection, our findings required the use of a wire puller or plow to direct bury irrigation wires for each inoperable sprinkler. These fixes have been taken care of, and we are back up and running. In addition, we are fully online with our pumping capabilities at Adams Dam. We have been flowing water for about a week into the pond on 13 and 18 North. Again, with the help of Mother Nature to keep irrigation requirements to a minimum, it will take about two months to fill the lower reservoir to the left of 12 North. We have some staffing changes to make you aware of as we begin the growing season. Braden Thomas, assistant superintendent on the South Course, is departing for Kennett Square Golf & Country Club. He will be taking on the lead assistant superintendent role at Kennett and has been with our staff since 2021, starting as an intern. Braden has been a part of many important aspects of our operation and will be missed, but we wish him, his wife Breck and young son Everett well! With Braden’s departure, we are promoting José Garduno-Arcos to Assistant Superintendent. José is a recent graduate of the Rutgers University’s Turfgrass Management Program and was an intern with us last year. Additionally, Andres Rebollo will now take on the role of Racquet Court Supervisor. You may know or recognize Andres where he has traditionally conducted North Course Set-Up, cutting the hole locations and setting tee markers on a daily basis. As we begin our playing season on the golf courses, it is important to scatter your golf cart traffic throughout the property. Please remain diligent in helping to keep our putting surfaces smooth by fixing your pitch mark, plus one other. This will help our greens heel faster and keep them in optimal playing condition throughout the entire season. We look forward to seeing you at the Club! Jon Urbanski

Last month, I had the privilege of visiting Congressional Country Club in DC and participated in an exhibition match in Brooklyn. These experiences remind me how lucky we are to have world-class facilities here at WCC.
MONTHLY RACQUET TIPS FROM THE PROS Pickleball: Keep Your Opponents Back Just as your goal is to get to the kitchen as quickly as possible, you should try to keep your opponent’s back toward their baseline for as long as possible. This will force them to hit shots that are more difficult and out of their comfort zone. Here are a few ways to do this: Hit your serves deep and as close to the baseline as possible Return serves with arc and as deep as possible so your opponent has to wait longer for the bounce before they can return it. This will also give you time to get to the kitchen line and go on the offensive sooner. Continue to hit the player who is further back in the pickleball court, aiming at their feet. Occasionally try a faster-paced serve, maybe with spin to catch your opponent off guard. Be sure you’ve practiced this before trying it in a pickleball match. If you can successfully keep or force your opponent’s back, you'll be in a much better position to win the rally. WCC’s Tier 2 PSRA team had a very strong win over Philadelphia Cricket Club on March 18th in the finals of the PSRA League. To lead off, Andy Houston and Mike Ashley won 3-1, and then Bo Anderson and Doug Herrmann sealed the deal 3-2. Jeff Ciconte and Brett Anderson got to play stress free in the third match winning 3-1. Congratulations! The Delaware State Squash Doubles Championships was held February 28-March 1. Buzz Hannum Jr. and Ed Chilton defeated Todd Anderson and Bart Mackey III in a 5-game burner in the finals. Jason Clare, Doug Herrmann, Jeff Ciconte and Brett Anderson also competed. Nine members from WCC competed in the US National Doubles Championships in Baltimore. MD on March 6-9, 2025. Brett and Bo Anderson WON the Men’s “B” National Championships in five games. Congratulations! Todd Anderson was a semi-finalist in the 60+ Division. He and his partner lost a 15-13 heartbreaker in the 5th. Jon Saunders lost a tough 3-1 match in the Semis of the 65+. Bart Mackey III, Doug Herrmann, Jeff Ciconte, Andy Houston and Buzz Hannum Jr. also participated with a few wins.
