mutual consent and if a wife “ did not esteem motherhood a privi lege, she could win a higher hon or” (Misc. Writings, pp. 297, 289). The Basic Delusion of the Cult The basic teaching of the un reality of matter led Mrs. Eddy to deny God as a real person, Je sus Christ as a real Saviour, hu man beings as souls in need of the grace of God. No cult better illustrates what Paul in I Timothy 6:20 meant by “ Science, falsely so called.” Here are a few samples of her scientific research: “ Elec tricity is not a vital fluid, but an element of mortal mind” ; “ Heat and cold are products o f mortal mind” ; “ Error says, ‘I am a man,’ but this belief is mortal and far from actual” ; “ Food n e ith e r strengthens nor w eakens the body” ; “But say you, Is a stone spiritual ? To erring mortal sense, N o ! But to unerring spiritual sense, it is a small manifestation of Mind. . . . Take away the mor tal sense . . . and the stone itself would disappear” ; “ As matter, the eye cannot see; and as mortal mind, it is a belief that sees” ; “Mortals must emerge from this notion of material life as all-in- all. They must peck open their shells w ith Christian Science” (Science and Health, p. 35, 28th Ed .; pp. 374, 478, 118, 74th Ed.; Misc. Writings, pp. 27-28, 58; Science and Health, p. 552). Mrs. Eddy rejected the Biblical teaching o f a personal devil, be lieving in “ animal magnetism” or mesmerism, bordering on witch craft, to explain evil. But she ac complished much work for Satan, for as Dr. Haldeman s ta te d : “ Christian S c ien c e comes in sheep’s clothing. It comes in the name of Christ, talks Christ, . . . and calls itself Christian; but in wardly it is a ravening wolf and not a sheep of Christ. It is a wolf, concealing its teeth until the de ceived soul is within its grasp. It is the wolf that would enter the fold o f the Good Shepherd, tear His sheep and devour them.” God keep us from this heresy. k b

Scientists treat disease as disease when there is no disease? This is done only as one gives the lie to the lie ; because it is a lie, without one word of Truth in it. You must find error to be nothing; then do you handle it in Science . . . just reduce this falsity to its proper denomination, and you have done with it” (Mise. Writ. p. 334). Much of Christian Science heal ing has been proven a fake, but we must not overlook the fact that the devil can work lying wonders and will do so more as the end of the age approaches. Healing based upon denial of Christ is Satanic. Christian Science and Death Although Mrs. Eddy may have deceived many into believing that man was incapable of sin and sick ness, neither she nor her follow ers had any success in the realm o f death. She could not make good her claims that: “There is no reality in death ; Death can be nowhere, for there is no place left for it; you can waken yourself out o f belief that all must die; death will be found to be a mortal dream” (Science and Health, p. 424, 74th Ed.; Unity of Good, p. 42; Science and Health, pp. 241, 347). At the age of 89, Mrs. Eddy went to her grave Decem ber 3, 1910, the medical examiner making out her death certificate to read “ probably pneumonia.” Christian Science and Marriage Although thrice-married, once- divorced and the mother of one son, Mrs. Eddy taught that the married state was inferior to the unmarried, and th a t the day would come when marriage would be abolished, when the human race would not be dependent upon sexual generation at all, but in Christian Science it would be the result o f mental operation. So great was the outcry against this that she modified it: “ Until time matures human growth, marriage and progeny will continue unpro hibited in Christian S c ien ce ” (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 286). Divorce would be permissible by
