Surgery Center Struggling to get our new building OUR NEW W hat many of our patients might not know is that we’ve recently opened our Surgery Center just across the street from our main office. The building faces our main office, which is tremendously helpful for myself, my staff, and my patients. Until

in place reminds me of my training for an upcoming Disney Marathon. The Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend is taking place on Jan. 13 of

our new building is complete, where we’ll have all of our resources and services in one place, we’re pleased to have this resource so close to us. We wanted to have the room to see our patients and to make sure it wasn’t crowded for them. With the extra space the Surgery Center provides, we can provide better service with the resources to do so. We didn’t want to send our patients from one building to the next that might have been miles apart. We don’t want people to wait for service they should be getting right when they walk through our doors. By opening our new center, we can alleviate some of the waiting time for patients, and we can give them the elite service they need. At our new Surgery Center, you can get extractions, full- mouth rehabilitation, and implants, which are the primary services we provide there. I’ve heard that some people are surprised that they need to go to the Surgery Center to get a tooth extracted or a crown. Though they’re not conditions that require surgery, we’re happy that we can provide these services in a larger space than our main office. Once our new building is finally completed, we won’t have to worry about being cramped, and we can focus on giving our absolute best to our patients.

AND DOWNS, AND I KNOW THAT ACHIEVING THE GOAL WON’T HAPPEN

There are several races for people with different skills, including the kids’ races, a 5K,

10K, half marathon, and marathon. My family loves to go to Disney, and I thought participating in their marathon weekend would be a great way to get myself and my family involved. Building the office has been very similar to training for and running in a marathon. There are a lot of ups and downs, and I know that achieving the goal won’t happen overnight. Over time, things get better and better until the day you reach that goal. Both will take time, but the results will speak for themselves.

OVERNIGHT. OVER TIME, THINGS GET BETTER AND

BETTER UNTIL THE DAY YOU REACH THAT GOAL.”

WANT TO IMPROVE BRAIN HEALTH? Grab a Sword! THE BENEFITS OF OPEN-SKILL SPORTS Did you know fencing is making a comeback? No longer just for heartsick gentlemen of the Regency era, fencing is increasingly being taught in public schools, displayed in the pages of popular indie comics, and practiced among seniors. Plenty of baby boomers are picking up swords, or “sabers” — and it’s not because they’re preparing to fight dragons. Exercise is important no matter your age, but some activities are more beneficial than others. Research published in the journal Psychology of Sport and Exercise (PSE) suggests activities defined as “open-skill sports,” like fencing, can do more to improve brain health than “closed-skill sports.” Open or Closed? The difference between an open-skill sport and a closed-skill sport lies in the dynamic nature of the activity. Going for a jog is great for your heart health, but your body is doing the same thing during the entire workout. This makes it a closed-skill sport. The same goes for swimming; you might have different strokes to choose from when you jump in the pool, but your brain is focused on repeating the action while doing your laps. Open-skill sports require players to respond to unpredictable circumstances in unpredictable ways. Fencing is a great open-skill sport because, while you have to learn the right way to hold the saber and move your body, you also have to think on your feet and react quickly to your opponent’s attacks. Researchers from the Foro Italico University of Rome believe that it’s the required adaptability that makes open-skill sports so good for your brain. You challenge your body with complex motor movements and your mind with fast decisions. In the study from PSE, the researchers reported that “the open-skill athletes used less brainpower to do the same thing than the closed-skill exercisers did.” What’s the Best Open-Skill Sport? If fencing isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other great open-skill sports, including tennis, badminton, basketball, and racquetball. What are you waiting for? Swing by your local rec center and find out what open-skill sport will be your new favorite pastime!

DENTAL TECHNOLOGY TREATMENT ffordable, We Provide the Best for Our Patients

When you walk into a dentist’s office with a toothache, you’d rather not wait to know why you’re in pain. You may get an X-ray of your mouth, but those can take a while, and the images may not be as clear as you’d like. A dentist can also look inside your mouth with a small mirror, but those are often hard to see. Intraoral cameras eliminate the waiting time and give both patients and dentists a clear image of what the issue is. Intraoral cameras are pen-sized tools used to provide a close-up of your teeth, revealing tooth decay, disease, cracks, cavities, or cancerous lesions that X-rays or other examinations can miss. The cameras take pictures of your teeth and increase the image up to 40 times their original size. Getting such a close view of your teeth provides a better view of the area and an easier diagnosis of the issues that may have otherwise gone undetected. The intraoral cameras also create a chance for better patient-team interactions. Without the use of the camera, patients may have to go hours or even days without knowing what the problem is. With the intraoral cameras, while the dentist examines your teeth, the clear image will be displayed simultaneously, and the dentist can educate you about your health. They can also point out areas of concern and explain different treatment options. In addition to creating a better relationship with your dentist and getting to know the problem you’re facing, intraoral cameras are excellent for record keeping. The images taken at your dentist appointment can be easily printed and filed. This creates easy access so your dentist can track your treatments and progress over the years, and the images can be submitted to boost insurance claims as well. At Elite Smiles, we use state-of-the-art diagnostic technology not only for benefits of the dentists, but for all our patients. We use intraoral cameras to give our clients the best treatment options we can offer. Contact Elite Smiles today at 904-201-3806 to learn more about how our services can help you regain a beautiful smile.

Safe Sailing This Hurricane Season

After last year’s devastating storm season, would-be tropical travelers are undoubtedly hesitant about purchasing those discounted plane tickets to the Caribbean Basin. No one wants to face a possible evacuation during their vacation — or worse, be forced to weather a hurricane at a beachfront resort. If you want the most bang for your buck while enjoying the turquoise waters of the Caribbean this fall, consider booking a cruise. Cruise-ship travel is a fun and adventurous way to explore any time of year. After all, what could be more magical than a floating hotel room where you fall asleep in one country and wake up in another? This charming mobility is also what makes cruise travel the safest option for visiting the Caribbean and the coast of Mexico this time of year. Much like resorts and airfare, cruise lines discount their Caribbean fares significantly during peak hurricane season, from August to October. However, unlike a traditional hotel, these massive ships have the luxury of navigating out of a storm’s path with ease. For all their ferocity, hurricanes move slowly across Take a Break SAFETY AND SAVINGS

the Atlantic and have relatively predictable trajectories. Meanwhile, modern cruise ships carry the most sophisticated weather-tracking instruments, allowing them to bypass even small storms and inclement weather.

FLEXIBILITY IS A MUST

The flipside of this ability to dodge storms is the fact that your ship may not be able to stick to its original itinerary. You may have to anchor at an island you weren’t expecting to or miss out on seeing a port you were supposed to visit. If you have your heart set on seeing a specific location, cruise travel this time of year may not be for you. But if you are simply looking for a safe, affordable vacation to a beautiful region, then it doesn’t much matter which white- sanded beach you wake up to next. While unpredictable weather will always be a concern for any vacation, the safety and variety cruises offer make them great options for anyone looking for a Caribbean getaway before the holiday season. So if you have a flexible schedule and a healthy sense of adventure, it’s time to call your travel agent, pack your sunscreen and bathing suit, and head to paradise!

The summer sun continues to blaze in August, but there is plenty to do this month! Family Seining If your family loves to fish, you’ll love this family- friendly event. On every second and fourth Saturday of the month, you can take your family to the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve, or GTM for short. The event is a perfect opportunity for the whole family to learn about seine nets and how to collect small fish and crab. A GTM naturalist will lead the event, and the gear required, which includes boots and waders, will be provided. The event is a chance for families to get in the water and learn how to use a seine net while learning about the species of local fish and crab. Come to 505 Guana River Road at Ponte Vedra Beach to participate. Creating Touchable Art Workshop One of the rules when visiting an art gallery is not to touch the art on display — except when the art created is meant to be touched. On Aug. 18, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the

St. Augustine Art Association is holding a workshop to create touchable art to engage visually impaired people. The artwork created here may be registered in the Art Association’s 17th Annual Tactile Art Show in October. The workshop will be led by Dian Bradley, a professional art educator who specializes in tactile art techniques. Head to 22 Marine Street in St. Augustine, and for $10, you can let your creativity out. Florida Skimboarding Pro/Am Tournament 2018 During the last weekend in August, you and your family can take part in the Skimboard Pro/Am Tournament attended by people all over the world. Running Friday through Sunday from sunrise to sunset, the tournament will host amateurs and top-ranking athletes alike. Whether you’ve come to participate in or watch the competition, all are welcomed at Vilano Beach, where the event will take place. Admission is free, so don’t miss out on enjoying the last thrills of summer.

Enjoy this month to the fullest!
