Scientists Wanted

W e are living in a technological age that depends heavily upon those who have been trained in science and engineering. These men are responsible for much of the present high living standard that we en joy as a nation today and in a very real way influence our political and economic destiny. Yet we find that our colleges and universities are not turning out enough of these techni cally trained men to meet the na tion’s need. This is a paradox. Why should the nation which pioneered in technology and has developed it to a point beyond that achieved in any other country, find itself facing a shortage of the type of men neces sary to maintain this position in the future? One would think that the very success that scientists have achieved would attract other men to follow after them. The cause for this shortage and how to overcome it has been the cen ter of much discussion in recent months in scientific circles. Some of the concern of the scientist about this condition has reached the general public .through articles in our news papers and magazines. Such articles frequently emphasize the fact that in Russia there has been an increase in the number of engineers and tech nically trained men graduated from their schools, the implication being that this shortage is not only a seri ous threat to our physical well-being but also to our national security. To me this shortage is particularly challenging to the Christian church. The church has long been at odds with science. It has been disturbed not so much by the technological

advances of science as by the theories and philosophies that it has generat ed. This cleavage has so separated the church from scientific thought that it quite frequently is not fully cog nizant of the full implications of modern scientific discoveries. If this barrier which has arisen between science and the faith is to be broken down, church and science must estab lish contact in a vital way. The church needs men who can determine the significance of the latest scien tific advances for the historical Chris tian position. But even more it needs men who can interpret the implica tions of Christianity to the scientist, his discoveries and the philosophical framework in which he works. This can only be accomplished by men who not only are sufficiently trained in science but who are at the same time sympathetic to the evangelical position. And for this reason I be lieve that our present national short age ' is a real opportunity for the church to advance into a field it has long neglected. This can be done by encouraging those young people in our churches to whom God has given scientific talent and interests to develop these gifts and to move out to fill this void. In so doing they will not only be bettering the physi cal well-being of men but they will be able to present Christ to other scientists who might not otherwise consider Him, and to exert an influ ence on scientific thought. Remember the words of Paul when he said, “ . . . I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.” How can the church do less for the scientist today? END.
