I ntroduction to the G ospel of J ohn The Author — The writer of the gospel we now study was one of the original disciples and apostles of our Lord (Matt. 4:21.) He became the leader of the church in the city of Ephesus and the author of five of the New Testament hooks, viz., the Gos­ pel, the three epistles of John and the book of Revelation. The Purpose — The purpose is distinctly given in 20:30, 31. Study these two verses. The gospel then is designed to convince men that Christ is the Son of God and the only Saviour of the world! To do this John is led by the Holy Spirit to select seven of the mighty miracles of Christ as signs or evidences of His deity. These signs are the dominant feature of the gos­ pel. Read the entire book through at one sitting as preparation for the study%Jot down a list of the evidences of Christ’s deity as taught by the book. Study Questions on Chapter 1 1. What is meant' by the term “Word” as applied to Christ? (v. 1.) Look up the marginal references in your Bible and study the Scofield note on this verse. 2. John expressly states what great fact about the Word in verse 1? Can anyone question the deity of Christ in the light of that statement? 3.
