Particularly when rowing competition or the mural fest are on, the bars and dining room of the hotel are pumping, with queues leading outside the doors, so popular is the hotel. Even in normal times, the hotel is a popular venue among locals travelling in from the regions, local and international travellers and ‘just locals. In addition to the Hospitality / Point of Sale system, Complete Information Solutions were also called upon to update the network / Wi-Fi infrastructure for the upstairs accommodation rooms and downstairs dining areas, upgrade the dining room visual monitoring to the kitchen to ensure high levels of service and build a new website. How is that for a ‘complete’ package of business solutions, and all completed in time for the staged re-opening. There is still a bit to finish off, including accounting integration, but Grant and team have certainly made the most of their downtime to get things prepared for full re- opening and trade returning to ‘normal’ with robust systems and solutions that will introduce new efficiencies to their business, even higher levels of service for their customers (if that was possible!) and support increased growth and trade.

COVID-19 – Making good use of the time Hotel operators generally never stop, but with the COVID-19 virus arriving on our shores, time was one thing that Sheffield Hotel licensee Grant Crawford had plenty of. The Sheffield Hotel has no doubt seen many ups and downs in its 138-year history. 2020 was no exception, with this worldwide virus having a significant impact on our famed hospitality and accommodation industries, and like many venues, being forced to close their doors for a time. This period left valuable time for Grant, Kenny, and team for thought and future planning, and time to contact Total POS Solutions, who specialise in solutions for Hospitality, Tourism and Retail businesses across Tasmania. Following consultation with Grant and Kenny, a plan was developed to update their previously unreliable computer systems with a new OrderMate® Hospitality Management solution that included mobile tablets for table service and integration to the brand new industry solution, HungryHungry®, that enables Online Ordering for takeaway and Order@Table for both indoor and outdoor dining areas.

Online ordering and takeaway has been a savour for many businesses during these challenging times and for many people has become the ‘new normal’, being able to dine out at home, leaving the cooking to your favourite venue kitchen. Order@Table is a new technology that is becoming more commonplace and has relevance in these times of social distancing and the preference for ‘self-service’. Order@Table simply involves the scanning of a ‘QR’ code using your own mobile phone camera, that opens the site menu on your device where you can browse the menu and place your order without even leaving your seat! The Sheffield Hotel has a long history, having been built around 1882, then known as ‘The Kentish Hotel’. Although having a chequered start, by 1896 it was in the hands of John Maddox and then stayed in the Maddox family for some 89 years. Current licensee, Grant Crawford and family have been operating the Sheffield Hotel since 2003. Sheffield, a traditional country town lies just 30 minutes from Devonport, 50 minutes from Cradle Mountain and just 40 minutes to Lake Barrington, home to the 1990 World Rowing Championships and a favourite rowing site since. Sheffield, also known as the ‘Town of Murals’, hosts the annual ‘International Mural Fest’, swelling the towns numbers.
