WELCOME BACK TASSIE!

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT MANAGER Mark Banovic

Welcome back from the Team T he Tasmanian Hospitality Association works closely with the education and training sector to encourage skills development and career pathways for our industry. Our Workforce Development initiatives include training, recruitment, work experience, information and engagement programs that boost industry capability through improving access to talent, advancing skills and boosting industry retention. There is no doubt that Covid-19 shutdowns and restrictions have had a severe impact on employment within the Tasmanian hospitality sector. However, as the industry rebuilds, we don’t want to see students ignoring hospitality careers because they are concerned about employment prospects. We believe that skill and talent shortages remain as longer-term challenges that our industry needs to address. A key component of our strategy to rebuild the Tasmanian hospitality sector for the long-term is our engagement with Tasmanian schools and students. Our Hospitality Showcase provides an important opportunity for senior high school and college students to be inspired by the many and various career prospects on offer in hospitality. An entrée into the sector, if you like. With restrictions easing, students now back at school and gatherings permitted in line with Covid-19 safety requirements, we’re happy to share that our Hospitality Showcases will be held in Burnie, Launceston and Hobart in September. These Showcase events are intended to encourage school students to pursue careers in hospitality. They are targeted at year 10 students who may be in the process of considering study, training and work options for next year. From participating in a Hospitality Showcase, we want students to understand that roles in hospitality provide wonderful career opportunities – they are not just jobs

to fill pockets while studying or looking for other work. Although, they can be great for this too! The Hospitality Showcase offers students hands-on experiences in cooking, shaking and muddling cocktails, front of house service and more. Our industry insiders share their own inspiring experiences and passion for the sector. We aim to show that hospitality really can take you anywhere! Representatives from industry training, school based apprenticeship and employer organisations will be on hand to provide information, guidance, and answer questions. Hospitality Showcase is about providing an inspirational experience that challenges negative perceptions of the career pathways on offer in hospitality. If you have a story to tell, an experience to share or an idea about how to engage with our future generation of hospitality hero’s, please let us know. We’re looking for people who can help bring our industry to life through Hospitality Showcase. If you’re interested, please contact Roger O’Meagher at roger@tha.asn.au or 0409 357 408.
