ANGLERS PLEASE HELP HOOKED BIRDS!

Fishing lines are one of the leading causes of injury and death to birds and sea turtles on Sanibel. They get entangled in the line and suffer a slow and painful death.

If a bird grabs your bait when you are fishing and gets hooked, YOU CAN HELP!

Please follow these steps:

1. Reel the bird in SLOWLY 2. If in a boat, use a landing net and boat the bird 3. If on a pier, walk the bird to shore slowly 4. Cover the bird’s head with a shirt or towel to calm it; hold the middle of the bill with one hand and place your other arm over the bird’s back and around its wings. If it is a pelican, be sure it has a gap between its bill so that it can breathe 5. Cut the line close to the hook and get ALL monofilament off its wings, legs and body 6. If injured or too tangled, follow all instruction above except #5 ( DO NOT TRY TO FREE THE BIRD YOURSELF) and place it in a large box or wrap it in a towel and take it to C.R.O.W. (3883 San-Cap Rd) or call them to meet you on scene. The clinic is open from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm, seven (7) days per week. Their number is (239) 472-3644. If you come after hours, the Clinic will accept injured animals until 8:00 pm. The drop site is underneath the building.
