Distance Learning Conduct 1. Students must demonstrate the technical and academic skills to be a successful online student; able to operate a computer and conduct internet functions necessary to complete an online class, and have the management skills to work independently. 2. Distance learning platforms are extensions of the College and are to be used for educational purposes only. 3. Download all provided eBooks and related course programs. 4. Log in and contribute to the online class on a regular basis in a meaningful way. 5. Cameras or video must be on during all Zoom class time. To be counted present for attendance, your camera must be positioned so your instructor can see your entire face, neck, and shoulders. 6. Dress for Zoom classes should be the same as if you were coming to school for class. 7. An appropriate class or learning environment must be utilized during Zoom calls. 8. Do not use Zoom while driving or in an unsafe environment. Students will be asked to leave class if their learning environment is not safe. 9. Conversations using the Zoom chat and Canvas chat features must remain professional and related to class content. 10. Comply with online participation requirements to avoid being dropped for non-participation at the beginning of or the mid-point of class. 11. Communicate with the instructor and fellow students in a professional, polite manner, using appropriate tone, language, grammar, and spelling. 12. Save backup copies of assignments and class emails. Safety Measures An instructor is expected to immediately remove any student determined to be unsafe in a Sumner College learning environment, which includes, but is not limited to: clinical partner sites, skills labs, simulation labs, and classrooms. Any student who is determined to exhibit unsafe practice will be required to immediately complete a Clinical Incident Report (CIR) and deliver it to both the instructor and the Nursing Program Chair. Depending on the unsafe practice, the student may be able to schedule a remediation to correct the unsafe behavior/practice, then they will need to show competency in said behavior/practice prior to being able to return to the learning environment. Termination Policy If a student exhibits unprofessional, unsafe, or unethical behavior, the Nursing Department Chair will evaluate the issues and determine a course of action which could include a written warning, disciplinary action, or termination. Repeated behaviors may cause termination from the program. Any student who is unprofessional or judged unsafe to practice in the clinical setting may also be disciplined or terminated from the program. Criminal Offense Record Investigation and Drug Testing All students enrolled in a Sumner Nursing Program will be required to complete a criminal background check. A criminal background check form gives permission for an agency to access all criminal case data including conviction, non-conviction, and pending data. Depending on the contents of the student’s criminal record, participation in clinical or field placement may be denied. In addition, a drug test is required, and a sex offender check could be requested. Failure to complete or participate in any required agency screening will result in the student not being placed at a clinical facility, which may lead to dismissal from the program. Failure to complete or participate in any required drug agency screening will result in the nursing student being withdrawn from the program.
