Sumner College Student Handbook

Attendance and Tardiness Sumner College expects students to attend all scheduled classes and arrive to class on time. Being present in class for all learning activities is necessary to achieve the learning outcomes of each course and tardiness is deemed as unprofessional behavior. Students who miss more than 20% of the total scheduled hours of a course will be withdrawn from the course and must retake that course. If the student fails to meet the attendance requirements in the second attempt of that course, they will be withdrawn from the program. Tardiness: If a student arrives 15 minutes after the scheduled start time for any class, they are recorded as tardy for the class. Additionally, if a student leaves up to 15 minutes before the instructor dismisses class, a tardy will be recorded for that student. Three instances of tardiness will result in the equivalent of one full class absence. If a student misses 50% or more of any scheduled class session, it will be recorded as a full class absence. Students are responsible for meeting the attendance requirements to be in good standing for each course and attendance will be monitored by the college. It is the students’ responsibility to contact the instructor when class time will be missed. Lab: If a student is tardy or absent for lab, the student must make up any missed skills in open lab. The student must complete the Skills Makeup Request Form and be approved to attend an open lab make-up to be checked off for missed skills. This form must be submitted within one week of an absence, and the open lab must be attended within two weeks of an absence. All skills must be checked off term by term to progress in the program. If a student is absent due to an extenuating circumstance, the student can petition to have the absence excused by submitting an Absence Appeal Form (Lab Lecture) or an Absence Appeal Form (Clinical). Extenuating circumstances include illness requiring medical care, family emergency, car accident, court appearance, mandatory training at work, military service and religious observation. Appropriate documentation must be submitted to: absenceappeal@ sumnercollege.edu. Approval of the absence appeal is determined on a case-by-case basis. Extenuating circumstances not typically included: illnesses that don’t require medical care, internet/computer issues, car problems, childcare/sick child, or weddings Attendance and Tardiness Policy for Clinical Experiences : Students in any clinical course must complete 100% of the scheduled hours. Any absence from a scheduled clinical course may lead to withdrawal from the course. Punctual attendance is required for all clinical experiences. Failure to be prompt or leaving early from scheduled assigned clinical may result in failure of course outcomes. Students are considered tardy if they arrive between 5 - 15 minutes late for a scheduled clinical experience. The third tardy occurrence will result in an absence. Arriving more than 15 minutes after the designated start time for any clinical experience will result in the student being sent home and being marked absent. Failure to complete all clinical hours will result in failure of the course. Attendance and Participation for Asynchronous Classes: Attendance and active participation are vital components of successful learning in asynchronous online courses. To ensure that students fully engage with course materials and discussions, the following attendance and participation policies have been created: 1. Attendance for asynchronous online courses will be posted every Monday and Thursday. 2. To receive attendance credit, students must actively participate in the course during the specific time frames associated with the attendance postings. For Monday attendance, students must actively participate in the course on either Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday of the same week. To receive attendance credit for Thursday postings, students must actively participate in the course on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday of the week being posted. 3. Active participation includes posting to a discussion thread, taking a quiz or examination, or turning in or participating in an assignment. 4. In all asynchronous course discussion posts, there is a minimum required word count of 100 words for the initial post and a minimum of 20 words for follow-up posts. 5. Passive activities, such as reading course materials or viewing pages, do not count towards attendance. Active engagement through participation in course-related activities is necessary to receive attendance credit. Attendance and Participation for Zoom Classes: The above attendance and tardiness policies for in-person classes apply to Zoom classes as well. Cameras must be on during all Zoom class time. To be counted present for attendance, cameras must be positioned so that the instructor can see your entire face, neck, and shoulders. Do not use Zoom while driving or in an unsafe environment. Students will be asked to leave class and marked absent if their learning environment is not safe.
