Clinical Assignments • Students will be assigned to provide nursing care for a selected client(s). • Students are required to prepare prior to the clinical day. • Students must complete all required clinical forms and assignments as outlined in the syllabus. • Students will be expected to explain in their own words various aspects of the client’s condition and the nursing care expected as necessary to complete the clinical form. • If the assignment is given on the same day, students are expected to use resources on the clinical unit to gather information about the client. • Clinical assignment due dates will be determined by the clinical instructor. Clinical instructors will permit only competent, prepared students to practice in the clinical area. Students are responsible for their own actions and may be liable for their own negligence. To be properly prepared, students must have clinical forms and assignments completed as directed by the clinical instructor. Students are expected to demonstrate progressive and consistent mastery of nursing skills and procedures. Students not prepared to provide safe care for their assigned clients will be sent home. Clinical Conferences Students must attend clinical pre- and post-conferences to receive clinical attendance. Day Shift Clinicals – Each clinical instructor will pre-determine where to meet at the assigned clinical partner site for the pre-conference . Arrive promptly at the beginning of each clinical shift. This is a time to ask questions and give initial information about your learning needs. Notify the clinical instructor of any procedures you may need assistance completing. Keep reference books nearby, in order to access when needed. Each student is responsible for any and all information covered during pre-conference, even if late or absent. Participation in pre-conference is essential for success. Each clinical instructor will pre-determine where to meet at the clinical partner site for the post-conference. Arrive promptly at the pre-scheduled time and place. Organizing oneself enough to end a clinical shift on time is essential for success. It is a must for students to plan and complete work in order to report to post-conference. Shift reports, class discussions, and other learning activities are held during this time. Each student is responsible for any and all information covered during post-conference, even if late or absent. Participation in post-conference is essential for success. Evening Shift Clinicals – Each clinical instructor will predetermine where to meet at the assigned clinical partner site for all conferences. Arrive promptly at the beginning of each clinical shift. Pre- and post-conferences are combined due to the late hour of dismissal. All clinical activities (case studies, shift reports, group activities) will be completed and/ or discussed during this time. Each student is responsible for any and all information covered during conference, even if late or absent. The clinical instructor can only dismiss the group after all students are in attendance. Organizing oneself enough to end a clinical shift on time is essential for success. Participation in conference is essential for success. Individual Conferences: The conference for your final evaluation is the only scheduled individual conference, which is part of each course and clinical. However, if a student’s overall performance falls below a 2.0 during the course or below satisfactory during clinical, the student will be notified, asked to complete a Clinical Incident Report (CIR), which is submitted for review by the involved instructor(s) and the Department Chair, and an individual conference will be scheduled. Students are highly encouraged to bring any personal, course, or clinical concerns to their instructors as they arise. Confidentiality As guests of any institution, facility, or clinical partner site, we are expected to abide by their rules and regulations. We must also respect the confidentiality of patient client records and information concerning patients/clients, as is governed by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) Privacy and Security Rules. Do not discuss a patient/client’s diagnosis, prognosis, or anything about a patient/client with anyone who is not involved in the direct care of the patient—which includes, but is not limited to fellow students, other nurses, or staff. These rules apply to the hospital, facility, clinical partner site, school, in your home, or in a social environment. Health care workers have had charges brought against them for these types of confidentiality breaches.
