Meals/Coffee Breaks Every student is permitted to have one 15-minute break and required to take a 30- or 45- minute lunch break during a clinical day, depending on the length of the clinical/practicum shift. For an 8 hour shift the lunch break must be taken after the conclusion of the 3rd hour and prior to the commencement of the 6th hour. For a 12 hour shift the lunch break must be taken after the conclusion of the 3rd hour and prior to the commencement of the 9th hour. Students are responsible for the cost of their own meals. The clinical instructor/preceptor will determine the break times. Students must notify the clinical instructor/preceptor if when they are leaving the facility for breaks or lunch. Upon return from break or lunch, the student must immediately notify the clinical instructor/preceptor. Lunch breaks taken on practicum rotations cannot be counted toward practicum hours. Smoking Most health care agencies/institutions have adopted a smoke-free environment policy. Students are expected to follow the site policies. If available, students may use the designated smoking areas at each site during a break or lunch. Injuries Students are required to report injuries to the clinical instructor immediately and follow the agency procedures regarding reporting and documenting of the accident/injury. Students also must complete a Clinical Incident Report (CIR), and forward the CIR to both the involved instructor and the Department Chair of Nursing Programs. School Closures If the College cancels clinicals, students may be required to do vSims with their instructor in place of on-site clinical. If classes are canceled during the day after the students have arrived at clinical, the clinical instructor
will inform the students if the College is closing. Clinical Facility Evaluation
Facility evaluations will be completed by each clinical group in one of the final pre-or post- conferences of each term. This evaluation is intended to provide feedback to the clinical facility regarding student learning opportunities, staff relationships, etc.
