Sumner College Student Handbook

School History Sumner College first welcomed students in July 1974, operating from a single campus in Portland, Oregon. Initially founded as The Court Reporting Institute, the college leased second-floor space near the Portland State University campus in downtown Portland and began offering a Court Reporting diploma program. In 1986, the institution was renamed the College of Legal Arts, marking an expansion in its curriculum with the addition of a Legal Secretarial program. By 1988, the college introduced a Paralegal program, further broadening its educational offerings. These programs were designed to prepare students for entry-level employment in the legal field. In January 2007, Cascade Education, LLC acquired the college, ushering in a new era focused on program development in the healthcare sector. Two years later, in 2009, the institution was renamed Sumner College to reflect its expanding array of programs. That same year, after extensive planning, the college launched its first nursing program, the Practical Nursing (PN) diploma program. This program achieved strong retention rates and career placement success, leading to the development of a registered nursing program in 2010. By 2012, Sumner College received approval from the state of Oregon and the Oregon State Board of Nursing (OSBN) to offer an Associate Degree in Nursing (RN) program. In 2020 the college launched their RN to BSN program, and In 2022, the college reached another milestone by becoming the first private, proprietary school in Oregon to gain approval from the state and the OSBN to offer a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. In the winter of 2024, Sumner College expanded its reach by opening a new campus in Bend, Oregon, which also offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.
