BUSINESS EDU One piece of advice frequently of- fered by the most successful people is to find mentors. It’s difficult to overes- timate the positive influence a mentor can have on your success. Finding a great mentor may be a challenge, but it’s worth the effort. A mentor can help you reach places you’ve never been and do so at an accelerated pace. Consider finding multiple mentors to assist with your dive career aspirations. A mentor is invaluable for several reasons: 1. A mentor has walked the path . They may have already accomplished your long-term goals. If your dream is to become a dive resort owner, a professional baseball coach, or a successful artist, it makes sense to find some- one who has accomplished that same goal. They know the realities of your situation, while others may only speculate. 2. A mentor offers guidance to set appropriate goals. Are you uncertain about the next steps to reach your long- term goals? A mentor may possess that information. You can be enthusiastic, serious, and capable, but your progress will be limited if you’re headed in the wrong direction. Having a mentor as a thought partner offers reassurance that you are on the right track.

3. A mentor has necessary tools when you need them. Have you ever faced a situation requiring tools you didn’t have? A mentor will ensure you have the neces- sary skills before you need them. Many people decide to learn after they’ve failed. It’s far more effective to be prepared. A mentor can point you in the right direction before it’s too late. 4. A mentor may share access to key contacts. The saying, “It’s all about who you know,” is largely true. When everything else is equal, people prefer to take a chance on someone they know. A mentor can introduce you to the people who will help you reach the next level. 5. A mentor offers an unbiased, experienced opinion . It’s not easy to make the best decisions when your knowledge is lacking. A mentor can fill that gap, helping you see the bigger picture or new approaches you might miss otherwise. 6. A committed mentor brings opportunities . A mentor won’t just introduce you to influential people – they’ll also connect you with opportunities that align with your growth and may even seek them out on your behalf.
