series of infinite evils. It is the ring ing of an alarm bell, whose melan choly sounds may reverberate through eternity. Like the sudden sharp cry of “Fire!” under our windows by night, it would rouse us to instantan eous action, and brace every muscle to its highest tension.-—Horace Mann. 9. The Proof of Association “We are unto God a sweet savor of Christ” (2 Cor. 2:15). Christ possessed a fragrant person ality. The early disciples caught and diffused this smritual charm. Thus the officers of the Sanhedrin took knowledge of John and Peter that “they had been with Jesus.” The charm of a fragrant influence lies in the unconsciousness of him who ex erts it. It is not necessary for us to know that our lives are fragrant. The fragrance is not ours, but Christ’s. If we see to it that we linger much in His présence, He Himself will mani fest His own sweet and fragrant life through us.—George P. Pardington. 10. Yielded Through Crucifixion "Take now . . . thine only son Is aac, and offer him . . . for a burnt offering” (Gen. 22:2). “ I am cruci fied with Christ: nevertheless I live” (Gal. 2:20). The sacrifice of Isaac represents the yielding up of. our very'self through crucifixion with Christ, and our death, not only to our bad self, but even to our good self. There is a foe whose hidden power The Christian well may fear; More subtle far than inbred sin, And to the heart more dear. It is the power of selfishness, . The proud and willful I; And ere my Lord can live in me, My very ,self must die. —A. R Simpson. 11. Encouraged in the Lord “David encouraged himself in the Lord” (1 Sam. 30:6). It is the Lord in whom we must find encouragement. If we look at ourselves, we see ourselves with all our failures and defects. We look a r o u n d at circumstances . . . They are like shifting sand, and cannot be depended upon. But if we encour age ourselves in the Lord, all will be well, for He never changes. All cir cumstances are subject to His con trol, and. as we look to Him by faith He will cause all things, good or seeming evil, to work together for our advantage.—Selected. 12. Standing in Dangerous Company “Blessed i s ,the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners” (Psa. 1 : 1 ).

You may be a Christian and not fellowship with God’s people. •But the man or woman who does not stand with God’s people is likely to stand with sinners. And there is not much joy to be found in standing there, for you will be seeking your interests and building your life around that which sinners do rather than around that which would honor and please the Lord. —Milo F. Jamison. 13. Praise, Our Neglect “Because thy loving-kindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee” (Psa. 63:3). * It might be well for us to try to pray sometimes without asking for anything. In our continual begging we. get behind in the thanksgiving which we owe to God. In the normal process He gives, and we thank Him. Sometimes we forget our part. Just for today let us lay all requests aside, and simply praise our God for His manifold blessings and mercies. —Gospel Herald. 14. Supernatural Living “Because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts” (Rom, 5:5). The victorious life is not a life lived in human strength nor in human love, but in the love of God. This life is a life of struggle and striving to attain and accomplish yet a life of quiet rest in Him. “For we which have believed do enter into rest” (Heb. 4:3). It is a life of supernat ural rest. Love and rest are sisters, and there can be no rest where there is nof love.—The Conqueror. 15. Three Rules for Bible Study “Make me to understand . . . thy precepts: so shall I talk of thy won drous works” (Psa. 119:27). Bengel had three remarkable rules for Bible study. The first was: “ Get everything out of the Bible.” Let it
