Instructions for: Pen Sublimation Metal
If you are using an OVEN and HEAT SHRINK BAG follow these instructions
(this is for a full wrap-around print or small logo)
1. You will need an oven and heat gun to do this. 2. Print the sublimation paper in mirror image with your sublimation printer. Use the full wrap- around template for the pen design. Cut the design out with scissors.
3. Take the pen completely apart so that you only have the white metal printable piece left.
4. Wrap the print over the pen, covering the pen, and then let the edges of the paper overlap.
5. Secure it first with a small piece of heat tape in the middle and then on the edges as well. Make sure the paper is tightly wrapped around.
6. Now apply a long strip of heat tape from the top edge to bottom edge on the pen (lengthwise). It will be over the overlapping print area, so the long strip of heat tape will be over the other smaller heat tape pieces you already applied to close the opening of the paper completely. Now trim the overlapping heat tape edges with a scissor.
7. Now slide the pen with the print into the heat shrink bag.
8. With a heat gun, shrink the heat shrink bag all over the pen. Do not hold the heat gun too close or too long on one spot, it will damage the heat bag. Hold the pen with a heat- resistant glove.
9. Bake in an oven with a shrink bag sleeve for 200°C and 5 minutes (turn the pen around after 2.5 minutes have passed and bake again for 2.5 minutes).
10. After the time is up, remove the sleeve and print from the pen.
If you are using a flat press/t-shirt press This is for full wrap-around prints or small logos -no heat shrink bag needed
1. Follow steps 1-3 in the above instructions. You can do full wrap-around prints in the flat/t- shirt press.
2. Set the press to 200°C and 150 seconds.
3. Make sure the pressure is very light and just softly closing on top of the pen, otherwise the pen will bend and lose its shape.
4. Press for 150 seconds on the one side and when the time is up, turn the pen around and press for 150 seconds. So 150 seconds per each side until done pressing all over.
5. Remove the print and tape after you press it. I found it easier to remove the tape and print while the pen was still hot.
If you are using a pen press This is only for small logos or names, not a full wrap-around print
1. You can do small logos or names without a shrink bag in the Pen Press.
2. Press on 200°C and you can press it anytime between 360 - 420 seconds.
3. Make sure the print/logo is not longer than 3.5cm - 4cm maximum and the width at 1.1cm at most. It might fade the areas that are exceeding this size. To be safe 3.5 x 1cm logos.
4. Secure the print completely with heat tape to the pen.
5. The pressure is very important, it needs to be furn pressure. Here is a photo of how my pressure knob is set:
