The office of an ambassador of the Lord Jesus is the highest known among men. Why should men, like Jonah, run away from it? And should this message fall into the hands of some soul upon whom the Lord has laid His hands for special service and who is faltering between that responsi bility and some lucrative business proposition that is looming up before him, let us relate a little incident for his benefit. When Andrew Jackson became President of the United States he was, as is Usually the case with presidents; overwhelmed with office seekers. Among the number was a minister of the- Gospel. Mr. Jackson said to the man, “ And what do you do now?" “ I am a minister of the Gos pel,” waB the reply. Said Jackson, “ Then go home, my dear man, and preach, for I have no office as high aB that.” . The devil does not care how he accomplishes his end, only so the end is reached, which is the keeping of the Gospel from the people. ¿He. M “ EXTRA-CORPUS BENEVOLENCE” Is it not distinctly affirmed in Scrip ture that we must all appear before the judgment-seat of Christ, that everyone may receive the deeds done in his body? Why, then, should. Chris tians so industriously plan that their best deeds Bhould be done after they get out of the body? Is there any promise of recompense for this extra corpus benevolence? And, after all, these benevolences of the dead hand are usually nullified. By a strange irony of custom we call a man’s legacy his “ will” ; it is really too frequently an ingenious contriv ance for getting one’s will defeated. — A. J. enable them to know all things which were revealed in the Scripture. (V. 24 ): “ Let that therefore abide in you which ye have heard from the beginning” suggests the necessity of letting the seed which was planted through faith in the beginning (when they were saved) abide in them. In other words, don’t let any Antichris tian preachers— "devil-birds” as they are— snatch the seed away and induce you to walk with them in the dark ness! (V. 25 ): “ And this is the promise that He hath promised us— even eter nal life.” We are not to infer from this verse that it is possible to have eternal life and then lose it. John is refelting, rather, to the message al ready given concerning false teachers, and to the passing away of this pres ent world, as stated in vs. 16, 17. (V. 28 ): “ And now, little children, abide in Him; that, when He Bhall ap pear, we may have confidence and not be ashamed before Him at His com ing.” The early church was sound on the fundamentals. They knew and be lieved the doctrine of the Lord’s re turn. The admonition here is 'to be looking for Him, and so occupied with Him and with His service, as not to be ashamed at His coming (2 Peter 3:13, 14): “ Nevertheless we« according; to his promise« look fo r new heavens and a new earth« wherein dwelleth righ teou s ness. “ Wherefore« beloved« seeing; that ye look fo r such thing», be diligen t that ye may be found o f him in peace» w ithout spot and blameless.*9 (The conclusion o f this theme» “ Chris tians and Antl-Chrlstlans»” w ill appear In April«) “ Ho« .everyone that thlrsteth» come ye to the waters« and he that hath no moneys come ye« buy« and eats* yea« come« buy w ine and m ilk w ithout money and w ithout price.99 * Captain's Name: Jesus Christ (Heb. 2 : 10 ) : “ F or It became him« for whom are all things, and by whom are all things.
