turns good for evil, conquers wrong by right, evil by good, hate by kindness. One who is angry is like a rapidly moving automobile that has gotten out of control. MARCH 21, 1926 What Does Jesus Mean by Cross- Bearing? Matt. 16:21-28; John 10:11-16 Satan tried to keep our Lord from going to His Cross and He is trying to keep us from our cross. These words were spoken to His disciples, not un believers. Their sanctification, not their Balvatlon, is the question here. We are saved by His Cross, i. e., by virtue of His death on the Cross, by which the way was opened for us to be saved (Matt. 20:28; 1 John 3:16; John 3:14; Luke 24:7; Heb. 9:22, 26; John 10:18; Rom. 5:8, 9; 1 Pet. 2:24; 1 Pet. 3:18; Rom. 3:25; Isa. 53:5; Col. 1:20-22; Titus 2:14 ). The things that happened to Him need not happen to us. Ho died that we might live. He bore our sins, we need not bear them. He was judged that we need never be judged. He was forsaken of God that we need .never be forsaken. He endured the holy wrath of God to free ujs from the consequences of God's wrath against sin. We are sanctified, or separated from the world, by our cross. Read care fully the* sixth chapter of Romans, especially verses 6-10. Also Gal. 2:20; 6:14. “ Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and dies it abideth alone; but if it die it bringeth forth much fruit." His death is a type or pattern for us (1 Pet. 2:21). We must lose our lives if we would find them. We must die, be crucified, if we are to live for Him in power. Crucifixion of self is necessary for fruitfulness in the Lord’s work. As He died that we might live, so we must die if others are to live, that is if others are to be born again. “ Take up His cross. These words are not to be understood as meaning that we should choose a cross. Begin only with self-denial and then the cross will come of itself. He says ‘His cross;’ for He does not teach that we should bear the identical cross which He bore. Everyone’s cross has been prepared according to the meas ure of each one’s strength.”— Martin Luther. MARCH 28, 1926 The Gospel in the Near East Isa. 54:11-17. (Missionary Meeting) During the past two years, 18,000 copies of the Bible have been distrib uted in the orphanages of the Near East Relief. These Bibles, printed in eight languages, were secured through the cooperation of the American and British Bible Societies, the Greek and
MARCH 14, 1926 How Overcome the Spirit o f Anger and Revenge? Matt. 5:21-26; Rom. 12:14-21 If we have such a disposition, we must certainly need Outside help to gain victory. Supernatural power is necessary. We have that help and that power in Jesus Christ. As we yield to Him and permit Him to live out His patient, forbearing, loving life, we will find that the spirit of anger and re venge 1 b gone. By prayer. Ask Him to give vic tory. Prayer changes characters. By Bible study. A diligent study of God’s Word has a profound effect upon the character of the student. (1 Thess. 2 :13 ). The surly, quick-tem pered and vengeful character will be changed into a character of kindness and love. Love is the antidote for anger and revenge. In the second Scripture ref erence verses fourteen to twenty-one may be summed up in one word— love. Verse 14, love blesses the persecutor (Matt. 5:10, 11). Verse 15, love is interested in others. It takes more love to congratulate than to condole. Verse 16, love regards the opinions of others and finds a point of agreement if possible (Phil. 2 :8 ). Verse 16,love has no unholy ambition (3 John 9). Vferse 16, love associates with the poor, lowly and despised. Does not stand aloof, is not exclusive. Verse 16, love is not conceited. Self-esteem and pride are among the most fruitful sources of quarrels. Verse 17, love re fuses to take revenge." Wounded pride is a very fruitful source of a desire for vengeance, yet there is no Christian grace more Christ-like than forbear ance and no virtue that will so quickly recommend the Gospel to others. Verse 17, love keeps peace. “ It takes two to make a quarrel." Live peace ably as far as you can without sacrific ing your principles or the truth of God. Verse 19, love trusts God. If we are true to Him, He will -take care of our interests. He is just and we can fully trust Him. Verse 20, love re
MARCH 7, 1026 Persevere—IN WHAT? Acts 20:17-24; Heb. 12:1-4 (Consecration meeting)
Perseverance is a most admirable virtue if it is directed in the right di rection. As Christians we should per severe in Bible study. Satan does everything possible to so occupy our time, even to the extent of reading re ligious books, that we will have no opportunity to-study God’s Word. To g^ow in grace and to have power in service, we must have a knowledge of the Bible, and this comes only by con sistent, diligent study. Persevere in prayer. Persistent, de termined effort is necessary for a life of prayer. We must learn to perse vere in prayer until because of our very Importunity our prayer is answer ed. Two Christian women, burdened for their unsaved husbands, agreed to spend one hour each day in united prayer for their salvation. This was continued for seven years when they debated whether they should pray longer and decided to persevere until death. For three years more they prayed when one of them was awak ened in the night by her husband un der deep conviction of sin. In the morning she hurried to tell her pray ing companion the good news and met her friend coming to her on the same errand. Thus ten years of perseverance in prayer were rewarded with the sal vation of the husbands. We need to persevere in Christian work. In western Africa it was four teen years before one convert was-re ceived into the church. In East Africa missionaries worked for ten years; in New Zealand for nine years before there was a single communicant. Dr. Judson preached in Burmah for seven years before there was a convert. Robert Morrison labored in China for twenty years before seeing any definite results. Persistence pays. “ The devil will let you never miss a prayer meeting or tt-Stnrtlay service, he will even let you get up and lecture on religious subjects and do all sortB of religious deeds if you w ill, just stop short at one thing and that is to get face to face with individuals and bring them to a decision for Jesus Christ and get them to confess Him openly. I used to get on the platform and lead the singing without doing personal work, but I knew in-the bottom of my heart that I was using my arms too much and my tongue too little."— Chas. M. Alexander. Stamina is needed and is produced by right diet, the Bible, strict disci pline of the body (1 Cor. 9:26," 27), and eyes fixed on the Lord who has gone before us.
