prised to see her still attending regu larly public worship. So one day he made known to her his surprise. To this she very politely replied, “ My con troversy was with you and not with the Lord, and I do not believe in mak ing the Lord’s work suffer because of some misunderstanding among His saints.” A noble answer indeed. Of course, the saints of God should never get on the “ outs,” but if they do they should never allow the Lord and His work to suffer because of their fail ings. KEEP CHRIST PRE-EMINENT The story is told that Leonardo da Vinci, in executing his Last Supper, painted the faces of the apostles so well that he raised expectations for the face of Christ which he failed to meet. With the face neither he himself nor any for whose judgment he cared was quite satisfied. It is easy for us in real life to have so many adjectives of praise for man that Christ is even less accounted of. ¿it* m To study God’s providence is a pan acea for doubt.— George Watson.

"Collection for Foreign Missions," and over the slot through which the con tributions should have gone he painted a huge cobweb. m DO YOU BELONG TO THE CHURCH? Some people profess to belong to the church, but what their profession really means is that the church be longs to them. It must be subject to all matters of their control. It must cater to their likings and disllkings. It must humor their whims. It must choose its minister, its choir, and its sexton according to their desires. It must be content to be the elongated projection of their shadows. If it fails in any of these respects, they repudiate all relationship and responsibility, and fling themselves away in a huff. There is a difference in belonging to the church, and imagining that the church belongs to you.— Watchman-Examiner A DEPENDABLE CLOCK A clock without face or hands may be heard, if not seen, at Lullington Church, Burton-on-Trent. It strikes .the hours on the church bell, and has 'given the parishioners accurate time for nearly 400 years. It was built in the 16th century by the village black smith, comprising two heavy stones, a 30 ft. long rope, and a crude escape ment. The sexton winds it up daily, the winding barrels being of oak like the beams in which the iron bearings work. A Burton clockmaker who has just put in new bearings and striking pins states there is no reason why the clock, which keeps excellent time, should not continue working for sev eral hundred years.— Selected. THREE KIND OF GIVERS Some one has said that there are three kinds of givers— “ the flint, the sponge and the honeycomb." To get anything out of a flint you must hammer it, and then you can only get chips and sparks. ‘ To get water out of a sponge you must squeeze it, and the more that you squeeze the more you get. But the honeycomb Just overflows with its own sweetness. Some people are stingy and hard. They give nothing away if they can help it. Others are good natufed; they yield to pressure, and the more they are pressed the more they will give. A few delight in giving without be ing asked at all; and of these the Bible says, “ The Lord loveth a cheer ful giver.”— Wesleyan Methodist. m THE OLD SISTER HAD IT STRAIGHT The good old sister had it straight. She had a contention with her pastor — a very uncommon (? ) thing these days. And the pastor was much sur
