LIVING GLUTEN FREE IN A NOT GLUTEN-FREE WORLD
First, let’s start with a lesson. What is gluten? Gluten is a general name for the proteins found in wheat, rye, barley, and triticale–a cross between wheat and rye. Gluten helps foods maintain their shape, acting as a glue that holds food together. Gluten can be found in many types of foods, even ones that would not be expected. Second, I have not always been gluten free. It all started two years ago when I had many medical issues that the doctors could not diagnose. They suggested the Mediterranean diet, which consists of fruits, veggies, olive oils, and whole grains. I committed for a few months, even though I kept gaining weight and feeling worse as the days went by. I am usually a good patient and listen to my doctors, but I knew something was not right. They kept giving me more meds to take for a new problem that would arise. I decided it was time to take over my own healthcare. It was August 1, 2021 when I cut out all newly-prescribed medications, all gluten products, and all alcohol. I mean at this point, what did I have to lose? It could only go up from here is all I kept thinking. Well, one month in, and I lost weight and my body started to level out. After three months, I asked my doctor to run labs because I wanted to see if anything was working. My doctor was shocked at how much my levels normalized and suggested a few more months of this before reintroducing anything back into my diet. Here I am over two years later, living gluten free. I mean, I used to think that it was so stupid how someone could be gluten free. I 100 percent understand it now and feel horrible for ever doubting anyone. However, the new problem is: living in the United States. In Louisiana alone, it is very hard to go eat and have the food be gluten free. I mean, you can only eat so much chicken, salad, and vegetables before it’s just boring, and you are often mad at the world for being gluten intolerant. With Thanksgiving this month, plan to bring your own food if you have a gluten intolerance, because most of the food cooked for a traditional Thanksgiving is not going to be gluten free. You’ve got the gravies, the casseroles, and not to mention, all the pies. I miss so many of these foods, but I have learned to make a few side dishes that I can enjoy. I would love to hear from my readers on places they have found that have more gluten-free options, or any great recipes. Bonus points for a gumbo; I have been craving that forever now.

THE SEASON FOR GIVING IS HERE
from the bookshelf
Thanksgiving is a time for food and family, but it’s also a great opportunity to give back to your community. The New Orleans Public Library has tons of fantastic reads to get your family in the giving mood. Children Young readers see how everyone can play a part in ending hunger with Misty Lee Coolidge and Bobbie Bensur’s We All Stir the Pot: To End Hunger! Set in and around the busyness of a food pantry and soup kitchen, children get insight into how coming together can make a difference. Help your little ones get excited for the holidays with You’re My Little Cutie Pie by Natalie Marshall & Nicola Edwards . This celebration of all things Thanksgiving features
grateful turkeys, sweet pumpkin pies, and cute cranberries dancing through this board book with cut-outs and raised elements. Thanksgiving Story by Danielle Greendeer, Anthony Perry, Alexis Bunten and Garry Meeches Sr. is a Wampanoag story told in a Native tradition. Readers learn about Weeâchumun (corn), the first Thanksgiving, and how the Wampanoag helped the pilgrims survive their first winter. Middle Grade For middle grade readers, try Kindness Is My Hobby: How to Change the World Right Where You Are . Written by award-winning teen humanitarian Ruby Kate Chitsey , this book Keepunumuk: Weeâchumun’s
follows the remarkable story of how she became an activist for senior citizens through easy-to-do, youth- led charitable acts. Along the way, Chitsey offers tips for how other kids can do the same. In the young readers edition of We Gather Together: Stories of Thanksgiving from Then to Now , Denise Kiernan breaks down the true story of how Thanksgiving became a national holiday in America. Kiernan opens audiences’ eyes while debunking myths, providing facts, and discussing what gratitude means to society, in an easy-to-read and age- appropriate way. Dive even deeper with History Smashers: The Mayflower by Kate Messner & Dylan
Meconis , which uses illustrations, graphic panels, photographs, sidebars, and more, to explore the little- known details behind the legends of the Mayflower and the first Thanksgiving. Teens To help teens engage with important issues of the day, check out Frederick Joseph & Porsche Joseph’s Better Than We Found It: Conversations to Help Save the World. Drawing on interviews with prominent activists, authors, actors, and politicians, this timely guide addresses some of the biggest issues of our day like climate change, gun violence, and transphobia. Stuart A. Kallen’s Teen Guide to Volunteering is also a great resource for older kids looking to get
involved. Divided into five chapters, this well-organized book outlines and explains a broad range of experiences and levels of volunteering. Kallen also lays out ideas of ways to get involved, including one-time options, long-term programs, and starting their own grassroots efforts. The Library also offers volunteering opportunities for teens looking to give back to their community! Visit nolalibrary.org/ teens to fill out a volunteer application or sign up for the Reading Buddies program, which pairs 8th-12th grade volunteers with kindergarten to 2nd grade students to help encourage a love of literacy.

GIGI’S PLAYHOUSE
By Madison Voorhies
It was the summer of 2003, a year since Nancy Gianni gave birth to her beautiful baby girl, Gigi. At first, Gianni felt lost when she realized she did not have any place to go that would support Gigi’s special gift: Down syndrome. Gianni then learned what she had to do. It was time for her to change perceptions and not only prepare her children for the world around them but prepare the world for Gigi, too! Down syndrome is a genetic condition where a person is born with an extra copy of chromosome 21. Each year, about 6,000 babies (1 in 700) born in the United States have Down syndrome. It can be difficult in Louisiana, and especially in New Orleans, to find special needs resources to assist your growing family. In 2020, Gigi’s Playhouse opened its New Orleans location amid the pandemic as a resource center and a safe place where adults, kids, and families can get together to learn about Down syndrome. Annie Watkins, site manager of Gigi’s Playhouse New Orleans, goes above and beyond maintaining the facility, managing its various programs and outreach initiatives, and overseeing volunteer work. She often welcomes new friends to the playhouse with open arms and invites everyone to be a part of their family. “I listen to a lot of the stories from parents, and there’s no congratulations,” says Watkins. “It’s just like, ‘Oh here, I’m sorry!’ Everyone’s apologizing. And that’s just absolutely not what this is about. The first thing we tell all families is ‘Congratulations!’” Watkins and her fellow volunteers recognize the importance of inclusivity and education for all, which makes programming within the Playhouse so important. To help drive acceptance and change the world’s view on Down syndrome, it all starts with our infants. From infants to school-age, Gigi’s Playhouse implements social interaction through music and sign language. They learn what every other typical toddler learns at this age: communication, independence, manners, and how to share. 12 NOVEMBER 2023 | NOLAFAMILY.COM
A great thing about these classes, according to Watkins, is the volunteers. The Playhouse is completely volunteer-run, meaning that people from across the city and state get to help out, and volunteers with Down syndrome also get to help with the younger classes. “One parent told me that she absolutely loved coming into the Playhouse when we had an adult with Down syndrome volunteering in the baby class,” Watkins says. “She could see that her baby was going to have a future. She could see that [this volunteer] comes here, and he plays with the babies, and he helps with the programs, and it’s all going to be okay.” Children can also begin tutoring at the Playhouse to improve important skills like literacy and math. Then they’re able to truly start exploring other significant growth activities like fitness, cooking, and nutrition classes. In Gigi’s Kitchen, kids and teens practice step-by- step routines on how to prepare healthy snacks, kitchen safety practices, and anything that supports independence. The Teen Tastic program is designed to expand on socialization and problem- solving skills. The teens at the Playhouse are just like regular teenagers, says Watkins. All they want to do is get dropped off and hang out with their friends. Gigi’s Adult classes typically do the same activities. They even have a program coming up called Achievers, which will focus on empowering adults through purposeful activities, like independence and communication. “Whatever each person’s goal is, hopefully, we can help them get there through some of these programs,” says Watkins. At the end of the day, that is their main mission: to drive acceptance and be a community resource
that’s there for not only individuals with Down syndrome but for their family and friends too. That’s what Gigi’s Playhouse is all about. Members know the Playhouse is a safe space for all, designed specifically for them and their needs. “There’s really no way to measure it, but I guarantee that there are huge impacts happening here at this place,” says Watkins. “There’s miracles happening, and it’s really fun to celebrate them.” It’s important to have a community that supports you, shares information, and builds off each other. Gigi’s Playhouse New Orleans runs 100 percent on donations, grants, and sponsorships, as well as being led by only Watkins and her volunteers. As Gigi’s Playhouse approaches 20 years of operation, it’s eager to expand its reach beyond the 58 playhouses across the United States and Mexico. They’re always happy to welcome new team members and volunteers, as well as anyone who wants to inquire about starting a Playhouse near them. Miracles really do happen here at Gigi’s Playhouse New Orleans, so it’s important to continue to support their mission of providing courage and acceptance to such a key part of the New Orleans community.
For more information on volunteering, how to get involved, or how you can support Gigi’s Playhouse New Orleans, visit gigisplayhouse.org/ neworleans or call (504) 321-6770.

mom about town
THINGS I’M LOVING RIGHT NOW 5
Mother. Jet-setter. Educator. Advocate. Since 1999, Paula Polito, Ph.D., has owned and operated Beary Cherry Tree, a five-star childcare center in Metairie. Over the last five years, she’s taken a step back from her director role to focus on advocating for early childcare and education. She even recently earned her Ph.D. in Urban Studies. Dr. Polito serves in many vital roles, but perhaps her most cherished one is being a mom. Paula and her husband, Darrin, owner of Performance Therapy Services, have three children: Preston, Sophia, and Pierce. DR. PAULA POLITO ADVOCATING
Brother Martin football is a huge thing for us right now since Preston plays. My daughter plays softball for Mount Carmel, and that kicks in in the spring. My little one does a lot since he’s 11, like flag football and basketball. Between school and Pontiff Playground, we just do whatever the sport is of the season. SUPPORTING THE KIDS
Since purchasing the center from my mother, every day I was developing relationships with families and teachers and making this the very best childcare center it could be. I want all children to be able to access high-quality care and education, so I advocate in many ways, serving on boards and task forces state-wide and as part of a group called Jefferson Ready Start Network.
We knocked a few things off the list this trip: my husband’s birthday, my kids’ love of the sport, and my love of travel. We were in and out so quickly, but my little one got to meet the LSU baseball players, and he was thrilled! OMAHA
OUR ANNIVERSARY
My husband and I have been married for 20 years now. For our anniversary, we went to France, and we took a ship from Nice to Barcelona. When you have three kids and you both own companies, it’s very difficult to put time away. So it was a nice quiet time for us to just get away. My favorite stop was Corsica: so beautiful, peaceful, and tranquil.
SUNDAY FAMILY DINNERS When you have a 17-year-old with a vehicle, you rarely see them except on the field or at dinner. So on Sundays, I’ll cook
dinner and have everybody over, including my dad. We watch football and hang out. I change it up, but spaghetti and meatballs is a popular entree.

Bountiful Harvest of Thanksgiving Crafts
BY DENISE YEARIAN While Mom and Dad are busy preparing for your Thanksgiving feast, you can get ready for holiday entertaining with these crafts and activities.
Items needed: Brown, red, yellow, and orange construction paper; ruler; pencil; scissors; glue; small wiggly eyes; stapler; yellow or orange drinking straw; and cardstock. On brown paper, draw and cut out a 7-inch half circle and a 2-inch oval. Wrap the half circle end to end to make a cone shape for the turkey’s body and secure with glue. (Note: leave a small opening at the narrow end of the cone to insert a straw later.) Glue two wiggly eyes onto the brown oval to form the turkey’s head. Cut out a small orange triangle and a red teardrop shape to Items needed: Yellow and orange construction paper, ruler, pencil, scissors, glue, and candy corn and pumpkins. Fold the long side of the yellow paper in half. Draw 1-inch lines that begin at the fold and stop approximately 1-inch from the opposite end. Repeat this step across the paper until you have seven lines. With the paper still folded, cut the lines beginning at the fold. Open and set aside. Mark off 1-inch lines across the shorter width of the orange TURKEY TALK PLACE SETTING
represent the turkey’s beak and wattle. Glue these to the face then attach the head to the narrow portion of the cone. Trace around your hand on the remaining paper to form turkey feathers. Cut these out and attach to the back side of the turkey’s body with a stapler. Make a 3/4-inch slit across one end of the drinking straw then slip it into the top opening of the cone. Cut cardstock to 3 ½- by 2-inches. Write “Gobble, Gobble” and your guest’s name on the place card and slip it into the straw slit. Repeat these steps for every guest attending your Thanksgiving banquet. paper then cut across each line until you have eight strips. Begin weaving the orange strips in and out of the openings on the yellow paper, alternating the weave with each row until all orange strips have been used. Place a dot of glue on each strip end to secure. Play the game similar to checkers. Use candy corn and pumpkins for game pieces and enjoy the sweet rewards of gobbling up your opponent’s captured pieces. The one with the most candy left on the board at the end of the game wins!
