BRANFORD PUBLIC SCHOOLS ADULT EDUCATION

ADULT EDUCATION Shoreline Adult Education (SAE) serves the Branford, Clinton, Guilford, and North Branford communities with essential state-mandated programs including the National External Diploma Program (NEDP), GED Test Preparation, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes, and Citizenship Preparation. Additionally, SAE serves as an Official GED Test Site and offers affordable community enrichment classes. Presently, 271 students are enrolled in mandated classes, with 80% attending one or more ESOL classes. Our diverse student body represents 38 countries and speaks 21 different languages, with Spanish being the most dominant. On the enrichment side, SAE offered 158 classes this year, covering arts & crafts, financial planning, cooking, music & theatre, health & wellness, technology, fitness, languages, and leisure activities with 897 community members participating. SAE emphasizes experiential learning. For example, in the ESOL classes, students engaged in hands-on activities including exploring action verbs and kitchen tools, resulting in the creation of a fruit salad. They also participated in shopping role-plays and engaged in activities like harvesting Sunchoke Tubers, fostering English conversation skills and public speaking confidence. Understanding the importance of family education, SAE offers tailored family literacy programs in Branford and Clinton. These programs integrate Adult Education (ESOL), Early Childhood Education, Parenting Education, and Parent and Child Together (PACT) time. Thirteen families participated in engaging activities covering literacy development, fire safety, health care, preschool/kindergarten registration, healthy eating, as well as interactive music experiences, arts and crafts, and a cooking lesson featuring pumpkin French toast roll-ups.
