Daniel Boisvenue, councillor for Ward 5 in The Nation Municipality, is running for a second term, saying there is still signi- ficant work left to do for his community. As he finishes his first term, Boisvenue said stepping into municipal politics taught him that progress often takes longer than expected, but that he still has projects and ideas he wants to bring to the table on behalf of residents. Representing Limoges, Boisvenue pointed to economic development as one of his biggest priorities and frustrations. While he said the municipality has made strong progress on the industrial and commercial side with the Innovation Park, he described Limoges as still lacking in restaurants and commercial businesses. He noted that municipal efforts can only go so far without cooperation from develo- pers and commercial landowners. After four years of work, Boisvenue said the community is now at what he called a turning point, and he wants to see that groundwork translate into real development. Traffic safety was another concern he raised, pointing to a lack of sidewalks in Limoges as a basic but often complicated issue to resolve, particularly as more resi- dents move in from urban areas. Lessons From a First Term Having previously worked on the federal political side for a government department, Boisvenue said he learned that municipal processes take time and depend heavily on building relationships. After 13 years living in Limoges and a decade as a volunteer fire- fighter in the community, he said establishing the right contacts still took time when he became a councillor. He said a second term would allow him to move forward more efficiently, spending less time tracking down information and contacts, and better understanding how to navigate municipal processes, including instances where seemingly simple municipal matters require provincial or federal cooperation. Priorities for the Next Term Asked about his priorities if re-elected, Boisvenue named economic development and public safety as his top concerns. He noted that policing costs are high for the municipality and that officers are doing their best with available resources, but said spee- ding complaints remain a frequent issue in a growing community. He said continued collaboration with police, paramedic, and fire services, the latter an area he has personal experience with as a firefighter, would remain a priority. He also pointed to a shortage of recrea- tional facilities and parks for youth as an ongoing gap, despite the addition of the community's sports complex prior to his time on council. Community Character With Limoges experiencing significant growth, Boisvenue said the challenge is balancing that growth with residents' day- to-day quality of life. While not opposed to growth, he said current and incoming residents shouldn't bear the financial burden of that growth alone, arguing the province needs to be a participant in supporting the pressures that come with it, something he said he has learned through what he des- cribed as a strong working relationship with the local provincial representative. Boisvenue also spoke about Limoges' identity as what he called a "bedroom community," with many residents, including himself, commuting to work in Ottawa. He said supporting community groups is key to helping new residents feel like they belong, rather than simply sleeping in Limoges. "I want that small community feeling," he said, even as the municipality continues to grow. Asked why residents should vote for him for another term, Boisvenue said he'd rather leave that judgment to residents themselves, but emphasized his availability and his dual perspective as both a firefighter and a councillor, someone who helps residents with everyday issues as well as during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. As a parent to a five-year-old, he said he sees firsthand the recreational gaps facing young families. Boisvenue closed by noting the scale of the challenge facing The Nation Municipa- lity's road network, comparing the length of roads and ditches maintained by the municipality, despite a smaller population than some neighbouring communities, to a drive from Limoges to Burlington, Ontario. He said working with other levels of government remains essential to sharing the fiscal load tied to that infrastructure. "We're all well-advised, but we're one of them," Boisvenue said of himself and fellow councillors, adding that when addres- sing resident concerns over rising taxes or speeding, he keeps in mind that he pays the same taxes and lives in the same community he serves.
