Schools across the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) com- munity will see significantly more books and expanded classroom libraries thanks to a historic investment from the board. The UCDSB recently announced that it is providing a total of $1.5 million to its schools to purchase more books for students. This spring, each school in the UCDSB received between $13,000 to $26,000 to spend on books that will spark a joy of reading in students, while also giving them more perspective of the world around them. “Through this investment, our goal is to encourage more kids to pick up a book and read for the enjoyment of it – be it a traditional chapter book, a picture book or a graphic novel,” said Eric Hardie, the executive superintendent with the UCDSB. “Access to high-quality books is an important part of building a love of reading. Reading is a critical skill for all students and central to this work is providing students with both the opportunity and motivation to learn through updated book collections.” Funds have been allocated based on student enrolment at each school, allowing staff to purchase hundreds of new books

Le gouvernement Carney a voulu montrer mardi qu’il passe rapidement à l’action, le ministre des Finances, François-Philippe Champagne, ayant fait un premier vers la baisse d’impôts promise en campagne électorale. Sitôt le discours du Trône présenté, M. Champagne a déposé un avis de motion de voies et moyens qui a pour but de concrétiser cet engagement. Plus précisément, les libéraux souhaitent faire passer de 15 % à 14 % le taux d’impo- sition de la première tranche de revenu, et ce, d’ici au 1er juillet. Dans un communiqué, le ministère des Finances précise que la motion doit aussi permettre de donner suite à une autre pro- messe, celle-ci ayant trait à l’accès à la propriété. Le gouvernement entend supprimer la TPS sur l’achat d’une première propriété neuve d’une valeur de 1 million $ ou moins. La TPS serait également réduite dans le cas d’une première propriété d’une valeur oscillant entre 1 million $ et 1,5 million $. Un autre volet de la motion servira à éliminer, dans la législation, la tarification du carbone pour les consommateurs, com- munément appelée «taxe carbone». Cette mesure, qui était impopulaire dans bien des régions du Canada, a déjà été abolie
au printemps par le moyen d’un décret, bien qu’elle demeure présente dans la loi. L’adoption d’un projet de loi devra suivra celle de la motion de voies et moyens pour sécuriser les mesures. La baisse d’impôts et les allégements fis- caux quant à l’achat d’une première maison sont mentionnés dans le discours du Trône présenté mardi. Le texte de 17 pages a été lu au Sénat par le roi Charles III, marquant une première en 48 ans. M. Carney insiste régulièrement sur sa promesse de baisse d’impôts. Lors de la première rencontre de son conseil des ministres, au lendemain des récentes élections, le premier ministre a signé, devant les caméras, un document portant sur cet engagement. Son équipe a précisé que ce document donne pour directive au ministre des Finances et du Revenu national de déposer, le plus rapidement possible, un projet de loi portant sur la mesure fiscale.
