A TRULY REMARKABLE TEAM DOING WHAT WE CAN FOR EACH OTHER AND OUR PATIENTS

For this newsletter edition, I need to address the elephant in the room.

enthusiasm and energy in their work and support of one another. They are taking on extra work and asking where they’re most needed. It speaks volumes to how much they value each other, their work, and the clinic, and I couldn’t be more proud. I can go on about everything my team does for the office, but I also want to take some time to highlight the good they’ve done out of the office too. Over the past few months, everyone has continued that bright and optimistic outlook. A few of my team members, Andrea and Dr. Steinberg, adopted new pets, which is incredible. Danielle and Ashley have done what they can for the community, reaching out to their neighbors most at risk and volunteering to pick up groceries for them. Team leaders have been diligently working behind the scenes, holding virtual meetings to prepare for our return on the other side, better, stronger and more committed to our patients and community. We have even added a third doctor to our practice.

Everything that happened in March, quarantining through April, and facing the unknown of the future feels pretty scary. However, instead of focusing on the fear and anxiety that inevitably comes with these types of situations, I’ve put all my attention toward the health of my patients, employees, and their families. Even before things started to shut down, my team and I were already coming up with plans to prioritize the safety of the people we interact with on a daily basis. I knew that we had to stay optimistic but also be realistic. We definitely didn’t want to put anyone in harm’s way, but we also couldn’t close the clinic. People who are recuperating after surgery — especially those who are two weeks out after their suture removal — need us, and my team also needs to have the means to continue supporting their families. To create balance, we implemented a system that allows all of us to work from home and go into the office safely should we need to. When the time came, I also made the decision to stop surgery for a while. At first, we weren’t sure if that was the right decision to make, but when both the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Texas Medical Board announced that elective surgeries should not be taking place, we knew we had to. I’m pleased to say that by having the forethought to prepare ourselves, we are still up and running and doing our utmost for our patients. My team has told me that they appreciate the way I’ve responded to this pandemic, and I have so much admiration and gratitude for everything my team has done as well. I’ve always appreciated their hard work, but in this difficult time, I’ve really watched them shine. Every Monday morning, we get together from the comforts of home for a video conference. Not only does this give us a chance to say hello to everyone’s kids, or “mini-coworkers,” but we also touch base to see what people might need for that day. They say that you really see what people are like in a crisis, and I’ve been delighted by the way my team has banded together. I see them brimming with

THEY SAY THAT YOU REALLY SEE WHAT PEOPLE ARE LIKE IN A CRISIS, AND I’VE BEEN DELIGHTED BY THE WAY MY TEAM HAS BANDED TOGETHER.

Even small acts can brighten the world up. We know that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. It may be far off, but we’ll get there, and when we do, we’ll be better than we were before. ENLIST YOUR KIDS TO SPREAD JOY AND BEAUTY THIS SPRING HOW TO PLAN A FlowerBombing CAMPAIGN

In 2014, a crop duster flew over a field at Cloverleaf Farm in California and dropped its payload — but it wasn’t spraying pesticide. Instead, it released an avalanche of rainbow-colored clay balls containing enough seeds to sprout 1 million wildflowers. When they bounced to earth, the term “flower bombing” was born. The original aim of this flower bomb, part of a campaign headlined by Cascadian Farm, was to save the disappearing bee population, but since 2014, the term has come to mean any unexpected gesture that leaves an explosion of flowers, joy, and beauty behind. In Ohio, Petitti Garden Centers flower bombs homes of those in need with surprise garden makeovers, and in New York City, a 2017 series of florist-led flower bombings covered construction projects in blooms and left giant bouquets on street corners. Wherever flower bombs land, they leave smiling people in their wake.

the perfect time to start! The May Day tradition of dropping baskets of flowers on neighbors’ stoops — a ritual dating back to an ancient Roman festival of flowers — makes this the ideal time to gather your kids and plot a colorful campaign. First, choose a target. Do you have a family friend who has fallen on hard times or a neighbor dealing with a loss who could use some cheering up? Plot a way to surprise them with flowers. Maybe you could deck out their front porch with tulips or cover their car in daffodil and hyacinth blooms. Whatever your choice, just make sure your gift will be a delight and not an inconvenience. Next, acquire the flowers. You could buy a few bouquets, but other options include taking a family daytrip to pick your own wildflowers or explaining your mission to a local florist and asking if they’d like to donate day-old blooms. Their generosity might surprise you! Last but not least, execute your plan when you won’t get caught. There’s nothing quite like waking up to an unexpected flower windfall, and your kids will love spreading joy on the sly! The best news about flower bombing is that you don’t need to own a floral business or a garden center to get in on the fun, and May is

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR ORCHIDS, AIR PLANTS, AND FERNS

Perched high in the trees in the rainforest, epiphytes reach for the drops of water that splash down from above. The plants take what they need and let the rest drip down to the forest floor. While these organisms originated in the wild, epiphytes like orchids, air plants, and staghorn ferns have become popular houseplants because of the unique, delicate greenery they bring to your space. Epiphytes are part of the Bromeliaceae family, a group that also includes terrestrial species like pineapples. The leaves of the plants in this family are arranged in a rosette, or circular shape, and they have tiny scales that help the plant absorb moisture and protect itself from harsh sunlight. Unlike many plants, epiphytes don’t take in all the water they need from their roots. They also absorb water and nutrients

through their leaves. Their roots don’t grow in the dirt, either. Instead, they help these plants cling to the trees or other plants they naturally grow on. If you’ve ever seen a tree with another plant growing off of it at a botanical garden in a warmer, humid environment like Florida, that tag-along plant is an epiphyte. Because they are unique, your epiphyte houseplant needs specific care to thrive. Submerge the leaves of smaller air plants in a shallow bowl of water once a week for an hour (times may vary depending on your area’s humidity). Then, remove the plant from the water and let it dry upside down to remove excess moisture. If you choose to house your orchid or staghorn fern in a pot, use a soil specifically made for them and add some sphagnum moss to keep the roots aerated. Mist your plant every couple days and provide the

leaves with a more thorough watering once a week to achieve the level of moisture they would receive in the rainforest while allowing the roots to breathe. You can also mount your epiphyte on a wood panel, as some orchid collectors do. True enthusiasts are very careful to match the wood with the type of tree the plant would grow on in the natural world, but driftwood, cork, and large pieces of bark work well too. Caring for your epiphyte properly will help your plant thrive and allow you to enjoy the tropical beauty of these unique organisms.
