JULY 2024

Celebrating Fourth of July Amid Brazil’s Flood Crisis A Fourth of July With Purpose

The Fourth of July has always held a special place in my heart. It’s a day usually bursting with barbecue grills, the laughter of friends and family, and the colorful fireworks display under the summer sky. It’s a tradition that comes second only to Christmas in my heart, largely because of the joy and unity it brings. However, this year’s celebration will see a significant change as we plan to spend our summer in Brazil, a country currently grappling with the severe impacts of floods, particularly in the Rio Grande do Sul region where we are headed. The recent floods in Rio Grande do Sul have been nothing short of catastrophic, marking one of the most severe natural disasters the region has faced in decades. Official reports state that thousands of homes were destroyed, leaving over 600,000 people displaced. Infrastructure damage is extensive, with many roads and bridges washed away or severely compromised, isolating communities and hampering relief efforts. The economic impact is also unimaginable. Traditionally, our Independence Day involves a festive atmosphere where the simple pleasures of hot dogs, hamburgers, and homemade fireworks create lasting memories. Yet, as we prepare to embark on a new adventure in Brazil, our approach to celebrating the Fourth of July will understandably shift. We aim to keep the spirit of the day alive but also recognize the somber reality facing the local communities we will be visiting. We planned to introduce our children to different cultural experiences while enjoying the Brazilian winter away from Georgia’s scorching heat. But as we draw closer, our anticipation is tempered by the knowledge of the recent devastating floods that have affected so many lives in southern Brazil, including Priscila’s own family. The usual excitement of planning outings and festive gatherings takes on a new layer — one of compassion and the desire to help. In light of these events, our family hopes to not just passively experience the culture but to actively contribute to recovery efforts. Celebrating American Independence Day while abroad offers a unique opportunity to share our traditions

with my wife Priscila’s family and perhaps even start new ones, but it compels us to reflect on the comforts we often take for granted. This year, instead of hosting large celebrations, we plan to focus on how we can support those affected by the floods. We hope to raise funds and offer whatever assistance we can to the displaced families, turning our holiday into a chance to give back. The Fourth of July is fundamentally about community and resilience, themes that resonate deeply with the current needs in Brazil. While there might be fewer fireworks and barbecues this year, the essence of the holiday — freedom, independence, and community aid — will be more pronounced than ever. If you’re interested in helping us support the flood recovery efforts or want to learn more about our journey, please reach out. Let’s use this Fourth of July as a reminder of the strength found in unity and the impact of collective compassion. —William F. “Trey” Underwood III

Summer Simmer Tips to Perfect Your Grill Game

Onions Have Layers The more you use your grill, the more grease, fat, and food debris accumulate on the grates. Luckily, onions are a natural solution to whisk away the mess. While caramelized onions are the perfect topping for burgers and steaks, you can use onions to clean your grill before grilling. First, ensure your grill is running hot; that heat will help enhance the onion’s cleansing properties. Then, using a skewer or grill fork as a handle, push the onion along the grill’s grates. The onion’s natural acidity will help break down built-up fat, grease, and food. Once your grill is clear, it is ready for use! Clean grates do wonders for the taste and quality of the meats and veggies you grill. Heat and Temperature If you’ve ever had to take a food safety course, you know every meat has an ideal cooking temperature. For instance, chicken should reach 165 degrees internally, and for pork, it’s 145 degrees. While grilling, use a meat thermometer to determine which proteins are ready to serve and which need more time. Once you pull your meat off the grill, let it rest for at least five minutes before serving. This time makes the meat more tender and allows it to finish cooking off the grill passively.

Summer is the season for grilling. From skewered vegetables to sirloin steaks, your grill is perfect for making flavorful, nutritious food. Whether you plan to stoke the coals at a neighborhood get-together or prepare an incredible meal for a special occasion, you can use these two tips to get the most from your grill.

Avoid Fireworks Fiascos! Your Legal Guide to Fireworks in Georgia

the injury was due to someone else’s negligence or a fireworks malfunction, you might have grounds for a personal injury claim. It’s important to note that claims against fireworks manufacturers can be challenging due to the inherent risks of using their products. Therefore, documenting the incident thoroughly and consulting with a knowledgeable personal injury attorney can be crucial. Remember, the goal of every celebration is to create happy memories, not painful regrets. Stay safe and informed, and let us know how we can assist you in making your summer enjoyable and secure.

Summer in Georgia brings warm weather, barbecues, and the celebration of holidays like the Fourth of July and Labor Day, where fireworks play a central role. While fireworks can provide a spectacular view, they also bring a significant risk of injury. We want to ensure everyone enjoys their summer celebrations safely and knows their legal rights when handling fireworks injuries.

Safety First The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a professional-run public display. However, if you plan to use fireworks at home, prioritize safety to reduce the risk of injury. Here are a few safety tips: • Always supervise children around fireworks. Often considered safe, Sparklers burn at temperatures high enough to melt some metals and can easily ignite clothing.

Understand Georgia’s Fireworks Laws

• Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby in case of fire or an accident.

Before you light that fuse, it’s crucial to understand what the law says about fireworks in Georgia. State law permits the sale and use of consumer fireworks, not industrial fireworks meant only for professional use! Moreover, fireworks may only be set off on personal property or at specified public or commercial venues where permission has been granted. It’s important to check your local community bylines and respect these regulations, as non-compliance poses a risk of injury and could lead to fines and legal repercussions.

• Never attempt to relight or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully.

• Wear protective eyewear when lighting fireworks and ensure all bystanders are out of harm’s way.

Legal Guidance for Fireworks Injuries

Despite taking precautions, accidents can happen. If you or someone you know is injured by fireworks, it’s important to seek medical attention immediately. If

TRAGIC LOSS AND LEGACIES

THE LASTING IMPACT OF MATTHEW PERRY’S ESTATE

An estate plan is crucial for several reasons: It ensures your assets are distributed according to your wishes after you pass away and minimizes potential disputes among family members. You can also designate guardians for minor children to ensure they are cared for. Matthew Perry, well-known for his role in “Friends,” proved to be one step ahead when he set up a living trust in 2009. The 54-year-old Hollywood star was found unresponsive after drowning in his Los Angeles, California, home on Oct. 28, 2023. According to NPR, “His drowning, coronary artery disease, and the effects of buprenorphine — a medication used to treat opioid use disorder — were noted as factors that contributed to his death, but were not the primary cause, according to the autopsy results. The death was ruled an accident.” According to a recent filing, most of Perry’s

belongings will be placed in the Alvy Singer Living Trust, named after Woody Allen’s character in “Annie Hall.” His father, John Perry, and his mother, Suzanne Morrison, are the trust beneficiaries. His half-sister, Caitlin Morrison, and ex- girlfriend, Rachel Dunn, were also listed. Perry also indicated that any children he had would not be entitled to access his estate. (He never had children.) According to FindLaw, “The Alvy Singer Living Trust trustees are Lisa Ferguson and Robin Ruzan. Ferguson was Perry’s business manager, and Ruzan was a friend and executive producer. Perry’s estate is valued at over $120 million.” The passing of Matthew Perry marks the end of an era as fans mourn the loss of a talented actor whose work left a significant impact on the entertainment industry. However, beyond his artistic legacy, Perry’s

death highlights the importance and benefits of estate planning, the significance of living trusts, and the blessing of orderly distribution of assets. His family is the fortunate recipient of his generous gift.
