The May Auction confirmed that the Spring and summer market is as strong as ever. Continued low interest rates and firm confidence in the property market and, yes, lighter evenings, sun and rain to encourage our burgeoning gardens, Jubilee celebrations around the corner and the summer to follow, all led to the growing anticipation of the evening and a warm sense of wellbeing.

This was manifested in the first lot of the evening, a purpose built supportive care home in Easter Compton. Fascinating for me as I was present at its opening twenty five or so years ago. Now surplus to requirements it was placed on the market with a modest guide price of £550,000. With twelve en suite bedrooms and a flat all in a beautiful country setting this did seem to me remarkably good value. My thoughts were clearly shared by the public as the bidding rapidly escalated in £25,000 bands all the way to £925,000 – a remarkable result and very heartening as it will very adequately allow our client to invest in other “very needy” areas of their work. As always, our catalogue proves we are eclectic auctioneers and the rest of the evening was spent in bringing my gavel down on a variety of property from Somerset to Gloucestershire. Let’s face it you cannot have anything more different than a Cart Shed in Cheddar to a warehouse in Woodchester, Gloucestershire, the latter proving the strength of certain areas of the commercial market, being guided at £65,000 and selling at £179,000. As always a good HMO is perennially popular, undoubtedly, providing a much better return than many other investments. The HMO in North Road with parking for six cars underlined my opinion. With a guide of £550,000 it rollicked home and sold for £660,000 ! With a 100% sales success and £5m raised in property sales I felt well satisfied to return home through yet another refreshing rain storm! Andrew Morgan MBE . AUCTIONEER
