What an incredible time to be alive and be in the cattle business! Those of us making our living in ranching have seen both good times and tough times in this business but, most have never seen times as good as they are today. You, the cow/calf producer, are in the driver’s seat and holding all the cards! Indeed, times are really good for the American rancher…but for how long? That’s the question on everyone’s mind. The understandable fear among beef producers is that this incredible market will end before they sell the next set of calves. While none of us know the future…we strongly believe that this market isn’t going to change any time soon. In fact, the last quarter of 2025 revealed some very positive data telling us that this market has legs and will stay strong for some time to come, such as:
• As of November 2025, cattle on feed were down 2% from the previous year. • As of October 2025, placements were down 10% from the prior year…which was the LOWEST since 1996.
• Marketing of fed cattle was down nearly 12%...confirming a tighter supply of cattle. • Any herd expansion that may be happening…is happening very, very slowly.
As we each plan for the future of our respective operations, it’s important we deal in facts, not fear.
