Giving Back and Paying It Forward
Making a Difference at Hagerstown Smiles It’s often said that doing good for others is not a duty, but rather it’s a joy and a blessing because it increases our own well-being and happiness. Helping others is the best way to be the change you want to see in the world. Here at Hagerstown Smiles, we place a large focus on ensuring our patients receive the best treatment possible and giving back to the community that supports us year-round. If you are a veteran but aren’t already a patient with us, you still have time between now and then to join us as a new patient to evaluate what type of services you may need. That way you can book an appointment to take advantage of this special opportunity! If you know someone who may benefit from this community event, please share this information so they can take part! We want to help everyone we can!
On Nov. 11, we will be hosting a Veterans Day Community Event for all of our veterans of the United States Armed Forces in need of dental work who are currently patients at Hagerstown Smiles. Our goal is to ensure everyone receives the dental care and treatment they need, and what better way than to give back to those who gave so much to defend our country and freedom? This Friday, our normal working hours will be extended to 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and we'll provide appointments and services, including cleanings, full dentures, and crowns, will run off of a first-come, first- served basis until our schedule fills up, so call today to schedule your appointment at 301-739-7003!
As a team, we find a new way to donate our time, services, and money to different charities each quarter. Most recently, we had the opportunity to help Agnes, one of our team members whose family is from Ukraine. In an effort to help her sisters and nephews to enter the United States safely, she selflessly offered her home to them. At Hagerstown Smiles, we made it possible for us and others to raise money, donate time, and provide assistance as she obtained visas and made cosmetic changes in her home to provide extra space and bedrooms to better accommodate her Ukrainian family. It was extremely special to help a member of our Hagerstown Smiles family in this way, and we are glad we could assist them!
Our goal as a practice is to constantly give back and pay it forward to those community members who have supported us along the way. Life is all about doing good for others and taking care of our neighbors. It’s not just about giving a donation — it’s about making a difference!

KEEP IT SIMPLE GET CAFFEINATED IN A ‘HEALTHY’ WAY
Its health benefits come mainly through tea or coffee. Walk into any grocery store, and you’ll notice that many highly caffeinated drinks are also high in sugar and additives. Sugar is extremely harmful to your long-term health — and no matter what benefits you read about caffeine, the harmful effects of sugar can overwhelm them by heightening your risk of diabetes, heart disease, and much more. The experts agree: Tossing a sugar cube or two into your cup of coffee isn’t the same as drinking a sugary Red Bull. Additionally, too much caffeine can cause some problems. In some individuals, caffeine can promote headaches, migraines, and high blood pressure. Caffeine is also a psychoactive substance, which means it’s habit forming. After a period of not drinking coffee, you might be familiar with the “caffeine withdrawal” and its side effects: anxiety, tremors, restlessness, irregular heartbeat, and
From pain killers to carbonated drinks, you can find caffeine everywhere on the American market. However, high caffeine consumption can pose risks. The good news is that in moderation, caffeine may contain useful health benefits, but if you want to actually benefit from caffeine, consider these healthier options. But what is caffeine, exactly? Caffeine is a natural stimulant — in other words, it stimulates the brain and central nervous systems, which prevents weariness and helps you stay alert. Over 80% of the world’s population consumes a caffeinated product every day, including tea, coffee, soda, and energy drinks. In North America alone, this number rises to 90%. Research shows that caffeine may possibly elevate your brain function and metabolism, and during exercise, it may even increase your body’s use of fat as fuel — but that doesn’t necessarily mean chugging an energy drink is ideal. Why?
even trouble sleeping. Thankfully, these effects are temporary.
Studies show that the people who benefit the most from caffeine are often those who drink anywhere from 1–4 cups of tea or coffee a day. You can also find zero-sugar seltzer waters with low doses of caffeine if you need a small kick. Keep it simple, and you’ll avoid excess sugar and reap the benefits of caffeine more fully.

3D PRINTING AND DENTISTRY
TIME-SAVING BENEFITS GALORE
In the last few years, 3D printers have become more mainstream. Originally invented in the 1980s, only certain industries utilized these printers because they were very expensive. Now, you can get a 3D printer for less than $10,000, which is amazing because it can make so many things, including furniture, jewelry, and toys. The dental industry has taken advantage of 3D printer technology, and many offices have started to use them to expedite treatments. Before 3D printing became available, if you needed a crown or a bridge at the dentist’s office, it was a time-consuming process. Typically, a patient scheduled a visit for an impression of their teeth, which would then be sent to a lab to be made. It could take weeks for the lab to create the crown or bridge. Once completed, the patient returned to the office so the product could be fitted to their mouth. At that point, if it didn’t fit, the dentist made small adjustments, but anything major would mean sending it back to the lab.
Now, because of 3D printing, some offices can even offer same- day treatment. By using an intraoral scanner, the dentist or dental assistant takes a scan of your mouth to create a digital impression of teeth. Then they transfer the impression from the scanner to the 3D printer. Very quickly, the 3D printer creates the crown from a porcelain or ceramic block and is ready for the dentist to seat. 3D printing isn’t used solely for treatments in the dental industry, though. Orthodontic work has also changed due to this technology. Many people have opted for clear aligners in place of braces, and 3D printers create many of the clear aligners people use today. Even better? Using the aligners can shave 6–12 months off the average orthodontic treatment time! There’s no telling how 3D printing will influence the dental industry in the future, but some companies have begun using them to print dentures. Only time will tell if they’ll become as popular as 3D-printed crowns. Oceanside Activities to Try This Summer page 4
Oceanside Activities the Entire Family Can Enjoy
The summer season is officially underway and many
Americans are planning to take a trip to the beach to celebrate the occasion. If you’re going on a family vacation to the ocean for an extended period of time, you may be worried about keeping everyone entertained. That’s why we put together a list of some of our favorite oceanside activities to try this summer. Your summer vacation will be filled with fun and excitement after trying some of these great activities! Get active. There’s nothing more relaxing than sitting on the beach and listening to the calm repetition of the waves, but maybe you want a little more excitement by the ocean. If that’s the case, there are plenty of sports to try. You can bring a football and throw it around in the water or on the beach. You can buy a net and set up a game of beach volleyball to get everyone involved, or you can try one of the many new beachside sports hitting the market like TidalBall,
pickleball, and Spikeball. TidalBall is the beach version
of cornhole, so if you haven’t played it yet, you definitely want to check it out.
Experience nature. The wildlife and environment of the beach are most likely drastically different from what you can experience back home, so make an effort to see all you can. At many beaches, you’ll be able to see dolphins, whales, and sea rays from the shore. You can also look in the sand for crabs and small crustaceans. By simply standing still and taking in all of the sights and sounds of the ocean, you’ll gain a greater appreciation for the surroundings. Ride the waves. You don’t need to be an experienced surfer to venture into the water on a board. Of course, you can take surfing lessons
at many beaches, but you can also get in the water on a bodyboard for a thrilling experience. Additionally, you can rent kayaks or paddleboards if you want to be on the water, but not necessarily in it.
