THE LSMS BOARD OF GOVERNORS APPROVES A $1,000 CONTRIBUTION

TO THE LOUISIANA VACCINE ALLIANCE FOR 2020.

On-Going Pharmacy Issues

5 Dr. Gamborg brought up two lingering pharmacy related issues he continues to see in the Lake Charles 6 area. The first issue is automatic computer-generated refills where a pharmacy’s computer system 7 generates a refill without a physician’s order and in many cases the prescription may no longer be 8 necessary or needed by the patient. The second issue is who owns the prescription. Is it the patient or 9 the pharmacy? Dr. Gamborg and the board believe it is the patient but would like an official answer. 10 After some discussion without any substantive answers, the following motion was made:

DIRECT THE EXECUTIVE VICE PRESDIENT TO INVITE A REPRESENTATIVE(S) FROM THE LOUISIANA BOARD OF PHARMACY TO ATTEND THE JUNE 3, 2020 BOARD MEETING TO SPEAK TO THESE

ISSUES.

Physician Coalition of Louisiana

19 Mr. Williams provided a quick update on the Physicians Coalition of Louisiana. To date, approximately 20 twelve (12) other physician organizations have agreed to participate in the coalition’s “Medical School 21 Matters” campaign related to scope of practice issues. Mr. Williams also informed board members that 22 the coalition is finalizing marketing billboards, a legislative reception, and White Coat Wednesday. 25 Dr. Broussard briefly went over the top legislative priorities for the 2020 legislative session that would 26 be our top priorities. Dr. Broussard stated that the LSMS Council on Legislation met on Saturday, 27 March 9, 2020, and reviewed bills. These included scope of practice issues, surprise billing, non 28 competes /restrictive covenants, collateral source provisions, and licensing, Medicaid and worker 29 compensation issues. Dr. Broussard invited any board member to join him and staff at the Capitol on 30 Wednesdays, which are typically the busiest days for health care. 23 24 2020 Legislative Preview 33 Mr. Williams provided a quick update on coronavirus issues impacting the society, which included the 34 posting of virus related updates on the LSMS Website, a recap of Eagle Capital efforts to safeguard our 35 financial assets and a national effort via the American Association of Medical Society Executives 36 (AAMSE) to protect member associations from any financial risk exposure associated with the 37 cancellation of future meetings if applicable. 40 Mr. Williams provided a brief update from recent meetings of the Louisiana State Board of Medical 41 Examiners, which included an effort by Podiatrists to perform full histories and physicians on their 42 surgical patients; moonlighting regulations for international medical graduates; which specialties can 43 refer to themselves as board certified; and whether or not a Physician Assistant can read imaging and 44 film. However, at this time, the LSBME took no action on any of these issues. 31 32 Coronavirus Update 38 39 LSBME Update 47 Mr. Williams also provided a brief update from recent meetings of the Louisiana Patients Compensation 48 Fund (PCF) Oversight Board.
