Hurricane Laura Update

28 After previously speaking to multiple LSMS physicians in hurricane impacted areas, Mr. Williams 29 provided a quick update on the damage to physicians’ homes and practices due to Hurricane Laura. 30 Lake Charles was the hardest hit area and will be without potable water, electricity, and internet for 31 several weeks. This will only add to an already fragile and strained medical infrastructure resulting 32 from COVID-19 closures, both temporary and permanent. Mr. Williams informed the board that the 33 Membership Department was going to delay billing physicians within the impacted area for several 34 weeks as a result. The board agreed with that sentiment, but no formal motion was made. Additionally, 35 Mr. Williams outlined financial relief Louisiana physicians received in 2005 after Hurricanes Katrina 36 and Rita from the American Medical Association (AMA) and the Physicians’ Foundation and pondered 37 if similar relief would be available in 2020 after all the financial damage created from the pandemic. 38 After some discussion, the board agreed that it did not hurt to ask and thus the following motion was 39 made:
