WELCOME TO 53 YEARS BREEDING SIMMENTAL SALE

We thank all who supported our production sale in Ramsay for the last several years. Last year at our sale brought cold and blizzard conditions. Most of the bidding took place online, phone, or private bids. We decided we can keep the animals home with less stress and still have the cattle for sale by the same online, phone, and private bids. This year we will be offering 21 yearling bulls, one 2-year-old bull, and 8 open heifers. The theme for this year would be quality over quantity. We encourage viewing bulls and heifers at the ranch. We will be having a field day on February 21st at 11:00 till 2:00. Free lunch provided. If you are not able to make the field day, contact us for a more convenient time. We will honor any private bids by phone or in person. The cattle for sale can also be found on our website at littlebitterrootranch.com. All pictures, videos, and information can be accessed on our website littlebitterrootranch.com . Along with a link to the catalog. We had a very dry winter, spring, and summer running out of pasture in July, so we weaned the bulls the 22nd of July. The yearling bulls were worked up to 10# Lakeland Bull Developer and free choice hay. We are very pleased with the performance. They gained 3.72#/day for the 125-day test. The group averaged 1319 yearling weight. We feel the bulls were not fed a hot ration just performance bred genetics and good weather. So, this year has been a challenge. Drought all winter, spring, and summer leaving us with 1/3 the hay production we usually get. Fall and going into winter has been a complete turnaround. Blessed with well above average precipitation. We are learning to accept the bad with the good. Helps us learn not to be complacent. Hope all are doing well with the good cattle market. Please give us a call with questions about our offering. The Lord bless and keep you, Frank & Marilynn Carr WE HAD TWO BEAUTIFUL WEDDINGS THIS YEAR!

YEARLING BULLS

N306 is a Phenotypic Herd Sire Prospect which has risen to the top. He excels in calving ease, growth, maternal and carcass merit. He had a 79# birth weight out of a first calf heifer. Took off growing, showing a 205-adj. WW of 780# with a 1.07 index. He continued to impress, gaining 4.27# per day for the 125-day test, indexing 1.10 yearling weight and 1452# adj. YW. The bulls were worked up to 10#/day of Lakeland Bull Developer so sure hasn’t been overfed. He measured a 5.8 frame. Very smooth, attractive, long, deep and wide on sound feet and legs with ideal hair coat. He has 14 EPD’s ranking 20% or better. I can honestly say we believe LBR Redemptive is a no hole powerhouse that has it all. After 53 years AI breeding to Simmental, LBR Redemptive is the best we have raised, and we will be using him in our AI program here at Little Bitterroot Ranch.

This LBR Redeem bull has risen to the top for performance indexing 1.13 for 205 adj weaning weight; 1.17 on yearling weight. Long, stylish, meat wagon. The LBR Redeem calves are docile with breed increasing quality that will drive your program to producing performance, maternal, and end product value. With N628 you can expect more birth weight and extra weight at weaning from your calves. IF you want more pay weight at weaning and beyond, this would be the go-to bull for the highest growth pedigree.

Out of a first calf heifer. She was the first cow to calve in 2025. Some of the Signature calves have little more frame than our average. This moderate BW bull could be that go to herd sire. The Signature cattle are second to none for docility. N289 was born smaller, gained above average for 205 adj. indexing 1.05 and has continued to excel with index of 1.09 for 365 adj. He was the 3rd highest gaining bull at 4.26 daily gain. Expect longer, thick bodied, growthy off spring from this 1435# YW bull.

Primal, the sire, was sampled this year siring calves with extra natural thickness with a moderate frame. Cardinal N801 was the only bull calf we got from Primal. Dam is an excellent ideal uddered female we have always loved. Her EPDs have never gave her justice. We also like her easy fleshing deep bodied profile. Should sire females you will love to keep. Docility also bred in the pedigree. 10

Hard to part with this eye-catching show profile female. Her EPD traits are hard to fault. 14 EPDs in top 20% or better. Calving ease, growth, maternal value and API and Ti numbers that will be easy to work with. I am not a show jockey, but with her good numbers, this one might work.

This heifer had the 2nd lightest birth weight so all indicate a real good calving ease female. The Dam is a good size cow that normally doesn’t have a small calf. Bold Ruler progeny we have are docile and dam is quite tame. Makes for a real-world cow making female you will love being around.

Angular, smooth looking female that carries real calving ease genetics. The bull calves out of LBR Redeem have proved his extra growth. I always thought Redeem had a little bigger head than I preferred but the offspring have not shown that and especially the heifers. Refinement in the right place.

A LBR Redeem heifer bred for some real performance. Larger and taller, docile offering. We are looking forward to see how the LBR Redeem females turn out. The EPD package for Redeem are very solid and own growth and progeny profile are exciting.

$ Indexes: Though EPD allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPD and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPD, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPD and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org. How does a genomic test benefit our customers? More accurate EPD - Genomic testing is a way to add information to what is known about an animal’s genetic potential even before they have progeny of their own. The commitment to add a genomic test to the genetic predictions enables our customers to have higher-accuracy EPD when they make their buying decisions. One way to think of the information gained is by asking how many progenies would this animal need to provide a similar increase in the accuracy of the EPD for that trait? These are referred to as progeny equivalents. Below is a table of current progeny equivalents. Adding a genomics test is like adding over 25 calving ease records or 22 birth weights on progeny to the EPD. As you can see for some of these traits, a genomically-enhanced EPD is like knowing an entire calf-crop worth of information for bulls or a lifetime of calves for females. Quick Reference to ASA EPD and Indexes Expected Progeny Differences (EPD): EPD are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPD, the difference between two sires’ EPD represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPD of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPD is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPD, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPD rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPD and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org. Listed below are the units ASA EPD are expressed in: All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat. Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight. Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first- calving daughters. Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. Marbling (MRB): Marbling score. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye. Warner- Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a steak. Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age. Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score.
