Awards of Excellence Rady Children’s 2021

Each year, Rady Children’s honors team members who go above and beyond for patients, families and their fellow staff members. This dedicated, talented group has demonstrated its commitment to the Hospital’s mission, vision and values. Their colleagues and supervisors have recognized their achievements with a nomination for Rady Children’s 2021 Awards of Excellence. Congratulations to all the employee, volunteer, leader and physician award recipients. Our people are what truly set Rady Children’s apart.

PHYSICIAN OF EXCELLENCE (POSTHUMOUS) KANISHKA RATNAYAKA, MD

LEADERSHIP: CLINICAL TIM RAWLS, RN Manager, Emergency Department, Emergency Care Center Tim was recognized for exemplary nursing practice and strong leadership by example. He encourages collaboration, accountability and respect. When COVID hit, Tim developed strategies to keep patients and staff safe. Under his leadership, the Emergency Department was one of 33 in the nation recognized with the 2021 Lantern Award from the Emergency Nurses Association.

SUPPORT SERVICES

PAOLA SEAREZ EVS Attendant, Environmental Services Paola represents the best of the best in the Hospital’s Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Excellence and Service (CARES) model. She encourages her team to work together and solve problems. She always comes to work with a positive attitude, treats everyone with kindness and jumps in to get the job done.

Dr. Ratnayaka dedicated much of his career to developing real-time cardiac MRI and most recently served as the director of the Dickinson Image-Guided Intervention Center and co-director of research at the Heart Institute at Rady Children’s. Dr. Ratnayaka was known as a skilled researcher, a brilliant physician and a compassionate humanitarian who worked to implement lifesaving health care programs around the world. Closer to home he’ll be remembered as an extraordinary son, brother, husband, father and colleague who always lent a hand to those in need. Dr. Ratnayaka passed away in 2021, but his legacy will continue to benefit children for years to come.

SADLER EXCELLENCE IN QUALITY GLENN BILLMAN, MD Chief Medical Safety Officer Dr. Billman was nominated in recognition of his extraordinary career. His championship of safety has laid the foundation for Rady Children’s commitment to becoming a high- reliability organization.

ADMIN SUPPORT JACKIE D’ANN WARD Admin Associate, Medical Unit

LEADERSHIP: BUSINESS KENDALL SANDERSON Manager, MPF Analytics & Clin Ops, Rady Children’s Specialists of San Diego Administration Kendall’s team sees him as a role model and mentor who shows the importance of compassion, empathy and kindness. His passion for quality in all that he does is admirable. Kendall holds himself and his team to high standards and is always willing to take the time to explain best practices or help resolve issues.

Jackie embodies Rady Children’s values in all she does. She consistently goes above and beyond for patients, families, staff, leadership and the organization as a whole. Staff can count on Jackie to ensure they have the equipment they need. She also volunteers for various events and manages the Hospital’s DAISY nursing award nominations.
