Safe journeys Road safety at Transurban is based on the globally adopted ‘Safe System’ approach, which is built on the principle that road safety is a shared responsibility. This means our approach considers the individuals and businesses using roads, the vehicles they drive, and the building and management of both our roads and the wider network.
We track our road safety performance using a road injury crash index (RICI): the number of serious injury crashes per 100 million vehicle kilometres travelled on our roads. In FY26, we lowered our RICI threshold to 4.00 (from 4.15 in FY25), reflecting our ongoing commitment to elevating safety across our network. 1 Despite this ambition, this year our RICI was 4.49, an increase of 0.33 on FY25, and 0.49 greater than our threshold (see Figure 19). We treat any increase in our RICI extremely seriously as each incident has a real impact on motorists on our roads. This aligns with an upward trend in RICI observed across the broader transport network since 2020. Our analysis indicates this is driven by multiple factors, including an evolving vehicle mix, alongside behavioural challenges such as speeding and distracted driving. This resulted in a high prevalence of rear-end crashes, which remain our predominant incident type. While most crashes on our roads do not result in serious injury to people in vehicles, we continue to identify and implement initiatives to reduce common crash types on our roads. We can’t control every decision drivers make, but we can keep improving how our roads respond when things go wrong, because even one serious injury is one too many on our roads. Initiatives include collaborating with key regional stakeholders to gain deeper insights into driver behaviour and design targeted initiatives. To share ideas and road safety strategies, we hosted a global roundtable bringing together police leaders from Australia and the US. While speeding and distracted driving were universal challenges on both sides of the globe, the teams discovered distinct regional approaches, with US police learning about Australia's advanced camera detection systems, and Australian police gaining insights into US wrong-way driving prevention. By connecting safety partners across our regions, we are sharing global expertise and building stronger partnerships to help get people home safely. Road safety initiatives We commission regular asset safety assessments through both the Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC) and the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP). MUARC analyses crashes on our Australian assets and compares our performance to similar roads in each state, such as freeways with similar traffic volumes. MUARC’s latest analysis found that, compared to like roads in each state, our roads are on average at least twice as safe. 2 iRAP is a charity dedicated to improving road safety. They provide ratings indicating the relative level of risk of being involved in a fatal or serious injury crash. All Transurban’s operating assets are iRAP- assessed, with 100% of our Australian and US assets rated three stars or higher by travel.
To drive innovative safety designs, we continue to deploy proactive technology on our major projects. In Victoria, we integrated advanced lane detection technology within the West Gate Tunnel, which automatically monitors lane discipline and detects potential hazards in real time, enabling our teams to manage incidents rapidly and reduce delays.
