Contractor safety
Keeping large workforces safe while delivering major projects and maintaining day-to-day operations is an industry- wide priority, and we continue to play our part.

Our safety performance We oversee contractor performance through regular monitoring and assurance activities, helping to identify and manage HSE risks in line with agreed standards. Although these processes strengthen safety outcomes, incidents may still occur. If incidents do happen, we use well-established processes to investigate, act on the findings, and share key lessons across all our regions. In FY26, our contractor Recordable Injury Frequency Rate (RIFR) was 2.39. This result is 1.01 below the FY26 threshold of 3.4 recordable injuries per million work hours and a 2.85% reduction on FY25. This improvement was driven by our robust assurance program and continued positive collaboration with contracting partners. In June 2026, a fatal incident occurred in connection with the West Gate Tunnel Project involving a contractor engaged by the CPB Contractors and John Holland joint venture. This incident has not been included in our official RIFR numbers, as it is outside our reporting boundary. 1 Recordable injuries include contractor fatalities, as well as: • lost-time injuries, where a person loses one or more full shifts from work. • medical treatment injuries, where medical treatment (other than first aid) is required. The majority of contractor injuries were sustained on construction projects and involved medical treatment without resulting in long term injury. We regularly evaluate supplier performance against safety targets, sustainability criteria, and other key performance indicators. Through operational reviews and compliance audits, we check our partners meet our high standards and operational expectations.
We also work closely with partners to identify and reduce HSE risks. Our HSE Roles Framework outlines safety responsibilities for our people and contracting partners. By embedding safety analytics into our risk reporting, this framework helps us better understand, identify, and manage hazards, incidents, and near misses.
