For German participants, learning new skills and topics, collaborating with people who share interests, making new friends and practising speaking English all ranked highly and at a similar level. Between 86.4% (n=610) and 88.8% (n=627) of participants respectively indicated these appealed a large amount or a very large amount . In both countries, all but one of the different benefits appealed to roughly over two thirds of participants a large amount or a very large amount . The exception was improving CV, which rated the lowest in both countries, appealing to less than half of participants a large amount or a very large amount .

Within the UK, experiencing German culture was ranked a close second, appealing to 84.7% (n=166) of participants, a large amount, or a very large amount. Making new friends, learning new skills and topics, building confidence, and collaborating with people who share interests , were then all ranked similarly appealing to roughly three quarters of participants a large amount or a very large amount . Considering the emphasis placed by UK participants on language learning as a project topic in the other questions (Graph 3.15), practising speaking German was ranked surprisingly low, appealing to only around two thirds (62.2%, n=122) of participants a large amount or a very large amount . This may indicate that UK participants feel less confident to speak German but are still interested in learning about it.
