Encouraging UK-German Youth Exchanges

4 Barriers and enablers for young people when taking part in UK-German youth exchanges

Young people’s level of interest in UK-German youth exchanges

Within Germany, 78.1% (n=547) of young survey participants indicated their interest in UK-German exchanges was four or five on a 5-point scale. This is lower than the number who indicated they were interested to the same extent in exchanges to any other country (88.1%, n=617). Results suggest that whilst German young people are more interested in exchanges to other countries, there is still substantial interest in UK-German exchanges (Graph 4.1).

In the young people’s survey participant’s levels of interest in youth exchanges were generally high, indicating that lack of interest in exchanges is not a barrier. However, sample bias may play a role here in that the survey will have attracted participants who are generally more interested in youth exchanges and UK-German youth exchanges particularly (see Chapter 2).

This chapter explores the barriers and enablers that affect young people when considering or taking part in a UK-German youth exchange. It is based primarily on the results from the survey with young people and supplemented by the consultation workshop tool.

(n=163) gave the same rating in regard to exchanges to other countries (Graph 4.2). Sample bias may again play a role here, in that the UK survey will have attracted participants more likely to be interested in UK-German exchanges than the general population (see, Chapter 2).

In comparison, survey participants in the UK showed nearly equal amounts of interest between exchanges to Germany and exchanges to other countries, as well as slightly higher levels of interest than German participants overall. 85% (n=165) of UK participants rated their interest in UK-German exchanges as 4 or 5 and 84%
