Graph 4.4 Young people - Barriers to UK-German youth exchanges (UK)

Within Germany, young people in the weaker financial circumstances group were significantly less likely to be interested in UK-German youth exchanges than their counterparts in stronger financial circumstances . 6 A statistically significant difference was not identifiable in the UK, though the small number of UK survey participants means statistically significant differences will not be identified unless differences between ratings are very large. Therefore, future research with larger UK sample sizes may still identify statistically significant differences in the UK between young people in weaker

financial circumstances and those in stronger financial circumstances .

In both countries, significant differences were not identifiable in relation to interest in exchanges to countries other than the UK/German, when comparing young people in weaker financial circumstances to those in stronger financial circumstances . Though again, future research with larger sample sizes might still potentially reveal significant differences, particularly within the UK.

Barriers affecting young people Participants in the young people’s survey were asked to identify the barriers that would prevent them taking part in a youth exchange (Graphs 4.3 & 4.4). Concerns about money were the most commonly identified barrier in both countries with just over two thirds of German participants (64.9%, n=432) and over half of UK participants (57.0%, n=109) agreeing or strongly agreeing this could prevent them taking part. This was followed by lack of

access to information about UK-German youth exchanges, where just under half of both German (42.9%, n=287) and UK (42.2%, n=81) participants agreed or strongly agreed that this was a barrier. Surprisingly, lack of confidence affected relatively few participants, only 1.6% (n=11) of German participants and 2.1% (n=4) of UK participants agreed or strongly agreed this was a barrier.

trusted like a youth worker or mentor to take part in a youth exchange . This compares to more than one third (35.9%, n=69) of UK participants who identified this. Over half of German participants disagreed or strongly disagreed that they needed support (Graph 4.5).

In general, UK participants were more likely to express a desire for support from youth workers than German participants. Within Germany only around a quarter of participants (24.9%, n=167) agreed or strongly agreed that they would need close support from someone they
